Meet a mentor

The night is run a bit like speed dating.

There will be tables set up around the room of approximately 6-8 students with 2 mentors on each. The mentors will introduce themselves for a minute each then the students will have 10 minutes to ask the mentors at their table questions. Once the 12 minutes is up, the 2 mentors will move tables. It should be a fun and informative night. It’s really informal and there will be a chance to grab a drink and have a chat with interesting people.

The mentors come from a range of backgrounds and include: software developers, designers, engineering managers, product owners and recruiters.

Students are welcome regardless of where or how they are learning about software and computing; universities, intensive courses, TAFE and any self-taught learners.

The night is based on a series run by the Graduate Developer Community in London that I used to help organise.

For anyone worried that they'll just ask the same questions as they did last time if they go for a second time, I think you'll still get a lot out of going for a second time. The mentors are all different so will have different opinions and insight. Feel free to email me [masked] if you have any questions.

It can be a bit spooky going to an event if you don't know anyone, however it was easy to fit in and the conversation flowed freely. It was a very enjoyable evening.

Same questions were asked at one table after a few rounds. Maybe if the participants (not only the mentors) could also swap sides (or tables) at half time they may benefit from other questions and answers also.

Thanks for the feedback, Dean. For next time, I'll work out a way to move mentors and students around the room but also ensure students get to talk to all the mentors.

Very good. I had the chance to talk to experienced people in the IT Industry and that gave me more ideas ab out how to tackle my limitations

Does meet a mentor event happen frequently? I've just realised that regrettably I can't go tomorrow.

    August 13, 2014

    • Georgina R.

Hey Roger, tomorrow is the first event and we're hopeful we'll have more of them in the future. Keep an eye out for other events on the meetup page.

Will there be such am event in Melbourne? Or is it possible to be involved online, like a webinar?

    July 7, 2014

    • Georgina R.

We'd love to hold an event in Melbourne but nothing is confirmed at this stage. We're hopeful we'll have more events like this so look out for announcements on the meetup page over the next few months :)

I'm looking to be a mentor at this event. Do i have to sign up as a mentor separately?

Examples of some questions students have asked in the past:

What do you do in a typical day?
How did you get into what you’re doing now?
    What helped you get there?
    What challenges did you face?
What do you enjoy or dislike about your current job?
Knowing what you know now, what would you tell yourself when you were just starting out?
