Lightning Talks & Coding Dojo

Lightning Talks & Coding Dojo

Hi guys, this week we have one lightening talk planned (see abstract below) but room for many more! Lightning talks can be anywhere between 5 and 15 minutes. New to alt .net? A great way to get involved is through a lightning talks. Think about what you are working on right now... Could you talk about that for 5 or 10 minutes?

If you think even maybe you could do a lightning talk please contact me [masked]

For the Coding Dojo I will prepare a few kata's. I'm thinking this time we might go Corey Haines style and do the game of life with various limitations on which language features you are allowed to use. So bring your laptops if you have em, but don't worry if you don't we'll hook you up with a pair.

A lightening talk on MVVM frameworks for the web (Knockout vs. Angular)

Basarat Ali Syed

Walkthrough of how XAML MVVM concepts translate into the HTML / JS world followed by a brief overview of the two most popular MVVM frameworks (Knockout and Angular) and
why you would pick one over another and does the world really need both.

JavaScript Playgrounds

John Bristowe

A lightning talk on JavaScript playgrounds (i.e. JS Bin). Specifically, what they are and why they're useful.

Most useful takeaways from these talks for me:

    John:
    - Explanation of differences between JS playgrounds.
    - Reveal (discretely) of Telerik's Icenium
    - jsperf.com for useful performance comparisons

    Bassarat:
    - Batarang for debugging Angularjs in Chrome (sanity-saver!)
    - Overview of Knockout and its direct comparison to Angularjs (we're sticking with Angularjs)
    - Importance of large fonts in presentations :)

    Great stuff guys.

Thanks for listening to me babble on about JavaScript playgrounds. For reference, here are the ones I mentioned: http://jsbin.com/, http://jsfiddle.net/, http://codepen.io/, http://dabblet.com/, and http://liveweave.com/. I also mentioned http://jsperf.com/ and http://icenium.com/.

I had fun, thanks for putting on a great meetup. The coding dojo was really interesting, I found it much more challenging than I anticipated.

I really enjoyed the AngularJS vs Knockout comparison. I've been working with AngularJS recently and loving it, so it was great to hear a .NET perspective on it.

I've been using Angularjs, so I'll be interested to see the pros and cons of the alternatives.
The JS playgrounds sound interesting too. Anything to improve productivity is good!
