BigSense Scala based sensor network + Geospatial Queries made easy

Details
This month we are at the spacious Queens Collective, across the road from Peoplebank. We've got two topics, Pablo Caif talking about finding your way in Java (GeoSpatial Queries) and another about sensing your way in Scala (BigSense sensor network) by repeat presenter Sumit Khanna
Presentation Overview
Geospatial Queries made easy - Pablo Caif
Geotools is an open source java library that provides tools for geospatial data. It provides an implementation of Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) specifications as they are developed.
In this talk, Pablo wants to explain us what is Geotools, what can we use it for. He also will tell us about Geospatial databases and CQl queries.
BigSense & LtSense - Sumit Khanna
BigSense is a web service written in Scala. It stores and aggregates sensor data from LtSense, a Python application designed to be run on embedded systems. Both are open source and are being actively developed for researchers and students to be used for gathering sensor data.
In this talk, Sumit will discuss the design of BigSense/LtSense and how it was applied to monitoring storm water run-off in Cincinnati.

In 2011, Sumit Khanna was an out of work software engineer living in Cincinnati, Ohio. At a friend's birthday party, he met Andrew Rettig, a Geographer who was researching sensor networks. Together they re-purposed off-the-shelf home routers with OpenWRT, an embedded Linux distribution. Together, they published several papers on using low cost embedded hardware to develop sensor networks, which lead to BigSense.
