What we’re about

Melbourne Young Hikers is a diverse group of young people who are passionate about the outdoors, adventure, and protecting Victoria’s incredible natural environment.

Join us to make friends, go on adventures, and challenge yourself. We run day walks, overnight hikes, weekend trips, social events and other activities, and welcome all levels of experience.

You need to be a paid member for the current year to join all our activities.

Membership fees are used to purchase yearly insurance from Bushwalking Victoria that covers our paid members during hikes and other events. They also cover the cost of Meetup fees and safety equipment. We are a non-for-profit association and all our hike leaders and committee members are unpaid volunteers who organise hikes for the enjoyment of club members.

Our social events are open to both paid and unpaid members and are a great way to get to know the group. You’re also welcome to jump straight in by joining up and joining us on a day hike - all our events are advertised on Meetup.

Please have a quick read of our rules and regulations (there’s a handy summary at the top).

We look forward to seeing you soon!

FAQs:

How do I become a paid member?
The membership form can be found in our events. Submit the form and follow the instructions to pay your membership fee ($40 for 2023-2024) - once we receive your form and your payment you’ll be marked as a paid member for the current year and can be added to activities.

You must be between the ages of 18 to 35 to become a paid member for the first time.

The membership year starts on July 1 and ends on June 30. Our insurance cost is based on our annual member number so unfortunately we can’t offer a reduced fee for part-year membership.

Why am I on the waitlist for an event?
If an activity is open to paid members only, everyone who RSVPs will start on the waitlist until the hike leader has a chance to check your membership status. Current paid members will be added to the ‘Going’ list and unpaid members will stay on the waitlist, so please make sure your membership is up to date.

Also, in the interest of safety and protecting the environment, hike leaders will often nominate an attendee limit in the event description or comments. If the limit has been reached, you're still welcome to join the waitlist. Check back closer to the event RSVP closing date as you may be added to the ‘Going’ list if other members drop out.

What if I can’t come to an event anymore?
Please change your RSVP to ‘Not going’ even if you’re currently on the waitlist.

The no-show policy applies to all events, so if you’re a confirmed attendee (you’re on the ‘Going’ list after RSVPs close) but can no longer come, please contact the hike leader as early as possible to avoid being marked as a no-show.
