Show & Tell & Ale: EAST

Build a demo, a thingamy, a doodad, a whatever, as trivial or fancy as you like. Then, the clever bit, we meet up and compare notes. The fancy can show off their wares and the curious can learn a trick or two.

Great discussion; thanks for coming and especially thanks to Glen, Ben, Rayhan & Alex for demoing :)

I've set up a Kippt list for us to drop in useful, high-quality Meteor resources - reply to this comment or tweet me with your Kippt username and I'll add you to it :)

Great, here's a starting point from my collection of interesting Meteor sightings: https://kippt.com/cw/m...

Good plan. Is it easy to batch copy all of cw's links to jg's board? Regardless, I've just signed up, so pls add an olizilla.

Just figured out, static web pages can go into public folder

      1 · March 22, 2013

By the way, if you put an HTML file in the "public" folder, it serves it as an HTML file.
    Weird, I know.
So, there , it's easy to serve a plain HTML file.

Ben showed http://cmyk.im the dribble for designers who just can't wait for a page reload. Get feedback on your designs instantly. He used metorite for the router package and got custom dns working for a meteor.com hosted app.

I showed http://goto.meteor.com to watch people turn up at meetups. https://gist.github.com/olizilla/5209369 a script to take a db dump from a live meteor app. https://github.com/olizilla/asciify the node cli module for awesomzing plain text, and demoed the alpha version of https://github.com/olizilla/meteor-the-medium-is-the-message

Huge thanks to Jon, Chris and Makeshift, and for all the demos, great questions and good discussion over pizza and ale. Same again next month?

Chris & Jon showed us http://listerly.co and talked about everything from routers, mvc, backbone, having to lose muscle memory to use Meteor, Telescope, Meteorite, community vs core, and more.

Rayhan showed http://map.wigwamm.com which will change the way people do online auctions. He gave great insight on how meteor let's you get up quickly but traditionally simple like having multiple pages, take some thought, and how Meteor's simplicity can be a parity check to stop you making things too complex.

Alex showed us http://slideheads.meteor.com that slices and dices pdfs into html presentations, and raised the issue of how the hell do you prevent chunks of the UI jumping around when everything is tied to a reactive model.

Glen showed http://squish.meteor.com a simple, elegant pomodoro timer that pulls random soothing or grumpy face images from the net as you work or play. He pointed out that it would be nice if Meteor had an event stream that wasn't tied to a collection.

Ok it's funtime. I've grabbed http://london.meteor.com and pushed a copy of GOTO up there. Try it on your mobile as you are heading to Makeshift HQ, and we'll be able to track you're approach. Add your email add it'll grab your gravatar.

Sadly, I won't be able to attend (will be Sizzling at Level 39), but I look forward to the next one.

This week got interrupted by the distracting issue of not being able to get a local copy of the mongo db running on http://goto.meteor.com to test out the clustering stuff from Mr Shaw, so I ended up making this: https://gist.github.com/olizilla/5209369

Tip of the hat to @fightingtheboss and the Meteor mailing list for providing the answer... https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/meteor-talk/KvDWrqZpy-w

Thanks Stu. We'll try a google hangout, and will post the link so you can tune in. Our official capacity for this one is 20, so we'll find room for the 26 Yes's that are still on for coming. Anyone else that know's that can't make it, do let us know.

Is it alright if I come by to just checkout what you guys have done? I've never played around with Meteor but would like to know some more about it.

I'll change my RSVP to free up a spot if needed.

More than decent enough, it's the zeitgeist! Michael Karliner has figured out how to push PowerPoint events to a Meteor app, and the talk I'm building for Mongo is gonna be HTML slides as Metor app. Contact me if you want to collaborate, but do feel free to build your own one too. Either way we'll have something to chat about on Thursday.

I'm thinking of hacking up something quick to show - basically turning presentation slides into some sort of realtime note-taking/chat experience. Could be interesting for university students. Does anyone think this is a decent enough idea for this meetup?

    March 18, 2013

  • Chris W.

I'll have two nuggets to show this round. New Listerly features that I've worked on with Jon plus a Facebook mobile app with camera capture and other internet magic.

  • Oli Z.

The pizza, beer and legroom will only stretch so far this month, so we've had to close the RSVPs... If you said you're coming and you know you can't make it please remember to update your RSVP and let some else in!

I'll set a up a Google hangout so anyone who wants to can tune in remotely. We'll decamp to a local pub by about 8pm, so feel free to join us for the ale and chat part even if you missed the RSVP.

Anyone got a demo they want to preview yet? I'm working on a Meteor talk for the London MongoDB User Group, on Wednesday so I'll bring that.

    March 17, 2013

Evening gang — plan is beer & pizza & tech demos at Makeshift HQ, and then decamping to a pub afterwards

I believe Oli's secured some exclusive schwag for the best demos — may the best hacker win!

Has anyone used JQM with meteor? Touchend events are not handled if JQM is not used, but I am getting layout issues if I use JQM. There are not many examples on GH.

So whose got a demo in progress for next week? Anyone want to step up and show the MongoDB crew what Meteor can do?

Venue is still TBA (the place I was planning on doesn't have phone signal/3G - d'oh!), will confirm by the middle of this week. But it will be in Shoreditch and will have beer & pizza.
