 Monuments in The Autumn Moonlight!

A Very Easy, Flat 4 Mile Social Sneaker Hike! (Metro Accessible)

We ONLY Have This Special Event When The Full Moon Falls On a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday and Will Actually Be Up During Our Event.

This is our very popular Washington DC Monuments by Moonlight sneaker hike, recently featured in the Washington Post, focusing on memorials near the Tidal Basin and the National Mall! We will walk for approximately 4 miles, around some of the most scenic and majestic parts of the national capitol Mall.

Join us as we visit each of the city’s famous memorials along with some monuments and more. Including but not limited to: the Washington Monument, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Abraham Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial, and the World War II Memorial. We will point out fun and interesting facts about each and allow time to enjoy each memorial as well as take some photos. Come enjoy the spectacular majesty of our monuments in the light of the full moon!

Pace Options
We have several paces for you to choose from so there IS a pace for you whether you are looking for a photographer (this group WILL stop to expose your lenses so is a TRUE photographer pace, casual/social pace, a more moderate hiker, or even a most brisk hiker. Groups spend the same amount of time at the monuments but the pace between our stops is what varies.

Pace options include:

A social walking pace of about 2.0mph led by Kellie and Sherry .

About 3 groups of a moderate pace of about[masked]mph offered by Mike and Lauren  which is the pace of an average hikers when we are hiking and used in most hike books as a rule of thumb for determining how long a hike will take.

Last but not least, there will be a very brisk workout pace of[masked]mph by Justin and Dan . If you sign up for this pace then you asked for it and no complaints as it is not for the faint of hear and is a very fast hike pace.

Please put your pace preference in your RSVP to help us better prepare for this hike and save time at the start!

Fido is Welcome on This Hike!

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette . We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back so no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

Please take note that this is a non-refundable event before you sign up. I don't want there to be any misunderstandings.

Let's have great times and see you there! Be sure to take the hike leader(s) numbers listed below with you just in case you have any trouble locating us at the meetup location.

Not feeling well so walking in the rain probably isn't the best idea. Hope to be able to do this next time!

    Hey Guys,

Thus far, it looks like the hurricane will not be here until Monday or Tuesday (see the latest via link below)

The storm schedule seems to be slowing a bit, so we are still a go.

BTW - This is Mike, using Kellie's login.

As stated in the event itself this is an event that is rain or shine. we do cancel for thunderstorms as hiking in lightning and thunder is not good times. See everybody there and looking forward to it thanks!

I lived in Florida for 18 years so have been through my fair share of hurricanes. The chances of bad weather during this event is 5% at this time so I don't want to cancel unless it is much higher than that. This event only occurs a few times a year becuase we go only when the full moon falls on a weekend AND if the moon will be up when we are hiking which limits how often we get this special hike. Saftey first though and trust me, I am monitoring the weather for all 13 of our hikes this weekend and have posted over 2200 events for our group over our 5 years so I leaned the hard way how to do this and by now it is down to an art form:) The hurricane is not due any where near us while we would be hiking or that would not be good times, or safe. NOAA is up on my computer 24x7 at this time and as a Floridan, old habits die hard, so I am even tracking it on my map-grin.

Hi Mike, with Hurricane Sandy on its way, do you still think we will be able to make this hike tomorrow?

      October 27, 2012

  • Danielle

    Moderate :)
Where is the meet up location?

    October 24, 2012

    • Michael H.

Danielle D information for where we meet for this event is contained within the document itself and is a link typically under a heading that says something like "directions for where we meet for this hike" or something very similar. I look forward to seeing you there and I'm here to help anyway I can:)

I can't seem to get the trailhead directions. Is this a 17th and Constitution meetup? I did this hike with you all two years ago and that's where we met up. Help, thanks! Donna and Rosie
