The Parks of New York City - Third in a Series

I've been asked by Andy to host this event since he unfortunately has a conflict. Poor Andy doesn't seem to be able to attend these events, so maybe we'll be lucky enough and he'll decide to run the series again in the future ;-) (nudge-nudge)

Anyhow, I'll stick to Andy's original plan in terms of our destinations. We will meet at Grand Central Station in NYC, by the clock in the main hall around 8:45. The plan is to leave for our first destination by 9.00 am, which should give us enough time to enjoy all four parks without rushing.

Everyone is responsible for getting to NYC by 8:45 to meet with the group. If anyone is planning to join us later in the day, it is their responsibility to find us along the route.

Since I know a large group of members will come in from New Haven, I checked the MTA schedule. A train leaves at 6:53 am and arrives at Grand Central at 8:44 am. I'll be on a train that gets into Grand Central from Brewster at 8:41 am. If you plan on catching the train along the route, please, check your local listings.

We will visit Madison Square Park first, then head to City Hall Park where we'll also break for lunch. Members are free to bring something to eat or look for something locally. In the afternoon we'll head to Roosevelt Island and then we'll conclude our NY adventure in Bryant Park.

We'll decide then whether and where to get something for dinner before heading back to Connecticut.

I apologize for not attending the second trip due to a death in the family.

While the outer bourough's are still recovering from Superstorm Sandy, I decided to concentrate on Manhattan. The 4 parks I hand-picked for this meet-up have a lot in common and are not as varried as the first 2 trips. I still feel there is enough to keep our shutters busy.

The focus will be mainly on statues, fountains, memorials and nearby attractions. There will be enough architecture to capture as we will be located in the heart of Manhattan.

Here is a tentative list of the parks in this go around:

Madison Square Park – 5th Ave. and Broadway
• Statues, fountains, artwork and open spaces
• Flatiron Building nearby

City Hall Park – Broadway and Chambers
• Many memorials
• NYC City Hall
• Fountain
• WTC site nearby.

Four Freedoms Park – Roosevelt Island
• Memorials and statues
• Circa 1800’s Smallpox hospital
• United Nations building nearby

Bryant Park – 6th Ave. and W 42nd St.
• Monuments and fountains
• NY Public Library
• The Great Lawn
• Times Square and Grand Central Terminal are nearby

The plan is to take a Metro-North train from New Haven or outlying areas and meet at GCT by a predetermined time. That time will be posted soon.
