- Dinner Meeting at The FledgeThe Fledge, Lansing, MI
Hello Everyone,
Mark your calendar for the upcoming MMAH Meeting at a new venue called The Fledge (a start-up business and community development center), located at 1300 Eureka Street, Lansing Michigan (MAP).
Attached herewith is a picture of the building that shows a 9-step concrete stair leading from the sidewalk up to the landing at the doorway. Not clearly shown on the side of the building is an access ramp that also leads up to the landing. (First timers are advised to arrive early to find street parking or nearby parking lot)
Since The Fledge does not serve food, we have the option of first having dinner and socializing in the Kung Fu Restaurant, located at 730 N Clippert St., Lansing, Michigan (MAP) starting at 5:00 PM before heading over to The Fledge at 6:15 PM for the program part of the Meeting that will start at 6:30 PM.
If you plan on joining us for dinner at the restaurant, please be familiar with the extensive online (Menu) beforehand so you will be ready to order upon your arrival around 5:00 PM.
RSVP is appreciated even if you decide to forgo eating at the restaurant and opt to only attend the program part of the Meeting at The Fledge.
We thank you for your attendance that sustains the continual existence of MMAH, as many freethought groups across the state no longer exist following the COVID Pandemic. The Program this month will be a full audience participation in an open forum discussion on the notion of “free will.” This program was engendered by a lively conversation on this topic by members who attended the Dinner Social at the Kung Fu Restaurant last month and requested that we continue discussion on this topic in the program for this month.
The program will be highlighted by a captivating video of neuroscientist Sam Harris, Ph.D., lecturing on the notion of “free will.”
Do we have "free will?" Sam Harris says, No! We are just puppets of unconscious forces. Sam artfully presents the view that free will is an “illusion,” and further challenges the religious view that God has designed man to have “free will”… that if you “willfully” disobey the laws of God, you will be condemned to suffer in hell for eternity, even though God, who is omniscient, knows in advance whether or not you will disobey His laws.
We look forward to everyone joining us for an opportunity to apply their critical thinking skill to discussing the notion of “free will” which remains an ever-popular topic of debate among the intellectual-minded.
About Sam Harris
Sam Harris received a degree in philosophy from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA. He is the author of The End of Faith, which was published in 2004 and appeared on The New York Times best seller list for 33 weeks. The book also won the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for First Nonfiction in 2005. In 2006 Harris published his book Letter to a Christian Nation, a response to criticism of The End of Faith. This work was followed by The Moral Landscape published in 2010, his long-form essay Lying in 2011 and the short book Free Will in 2012.His writing has been published in over fifteen languages, and has appeared in Newsweek, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Economist, The Times (London), The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, The Annals of Neurology, and elsewhere.
He and his work have been discussed in Newsweek, TIME, The New York Times, Scientific American, Nature, Rolling Stone, and many other journals.
He is a Co-Founder and CEO of Project Reason, a nonprofit foundation devoted to spreading scientific knowledge and secular values in society. In the prelude to the main program will be time for announcements, and an opportunity for attendees to share their thoughts on any subject - such as latest political news headlines, or recommendation on a book, a movie, a restaurant, etc.
