To clarify a point, there is no membership to the tea party. It's a state of heart and mind - how you feel as an American in your heart, and what you envision our nation to be based on fundamental truths, reason and logic.

Letters to the Editor: Tea party Republicans embrace principles of nation's founders, Oct. 28, 2013

Seventeen trillion dollars. This is the number we should be concerned about. This is the amount of money our government owes.

This is 1 million piles of 1 million dollars bills multiplied by 17.

As the character in the old "Life of Riley" (radio and TV show) used to say “What a revolting development to this is!” Continuing in the same vein, look at the cities such as Detroit, Chicago and many more – and states like New York and California and many more. They have been under Democratic control for the lasts 50 years.

And let us not forget our own Bay State. Forty-one out of 50 states pay less taxes than we do. In a recent issue of The Republican both a letter writer and an op-ed writer attempted to crucify the tea party. Now I am not a member of the tea party, but am cognizant of its principles and values. These are the principles and values upon which our country was founded, namely through the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.

I firmly believe that all true Americans adhere to these qualities. I believe they are all self-explanatory. The tea party believes that we need smaller government, fiscal responsibility, power in the hands of local government, strong national defense and less intrusion in the private sector, etc., etc.

In closing, I would like to state that the tea party believes the government should only do for its citizens what they cannot do for themselves. The tea party is the party of principle, the party of opportunity and the party of optimism. May God bless America and the tea party.
