A Leap Forward for SQL on Hadoop

IBM will discuss the various SQL on Hadoop alternatives and explore why such technologies have become an area of keen interest for many organizations. IBM will discuss the various alternatives (Drill, Impala, Hive, Hadapt, Tajo, Shark, HAWQ, Presto, Phoenix, Big SQL) and their pros/cons. IBM will share customer use cases for Warehouse Modernization and the role of SQL for Hadoop in this space, as well as discuss performance characteristics of SQL on Hadoop when running common query workloads. IBM will provide an introduction to Big SQL with a workshop and demonstration. Big SQL delivers some exciting capabilities including comprehensive SQL functionality that leverages advanced SQL compiler/runtime all with low latency and high performance.

This will be a hands on event. Sean has posted instructions for installing VMware and are copied here:

Hello All- For those who are attending next week's session, and are interested in participating during the hands on portion of the session, here are the instructions:

1. Please bring a laptop with either VMware Player or workstation installed.

2. Prior to the session, please go the following link and download the IBM InfoShpere BigInsights Quick Start Edition VMware Image:

3. If for some reason you are unable to download the image, we will have it available on a flash drive.

The meeting begins at 6:00pm; pizza will be available at 5:30 - please arrive early for networking!

Parking within the building:

There is meter around the building or you can park within the parking structure. The parking garage is inside the building and the entrance is on the east side (Market Street). Once parked, take the structure elevator to the ground floor. Follow the signs on the ground floor to the left to get to the tower elevator bank (main lobby on the south side of the building), which will be located across from the revolving door at the building’s Main Enterence. We are located on the 9th floor, Suite 950. Please bring your ticket to the office for validation.
