So Much More Than Stress Reduction

Mindfulness practice can benefit you in all areas of your life: physical, mental, and emotional… and it’s not something you need to acquire; this powerful internal resource already resides within you, available and patiently awaiting to be re-awakened and used in the service of helping you lead a more joyful, awake, and peaceful life.

The science around this has been truly amazing: a flurry of recent scientific research has shown that along with dramatically affecting well-being and relaxation, meditation may also help increase self- kindness, balance the immune system, help the body resist disease, and even heal.

The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program, which can train you how to access this amazing inner resource, was designed as a complement to conventional medical management, and modeled after the classes offered at the Stress Reduction Clinic developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.

This 30-year-old program is highly respected in the medical community, and has been featured on PBS in Bill Moyers’ documentary, Healing and the Mind (seen by more than 40 million), The Oprah Winfrey Show, NBC’s Dateline, ABC’s Evening News and Chronicle programs, and hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles.

The Workshop
This intimate and intensive workshop will teach you how to establish your own unique practice, along with techniques in mindfulness meditation and movement that have been clinically proven to reduce, and in some cases eliminate, physical and emotional symptoms that are made worse by stress. The techniques are especially useful in working with:

• Stress (Relations, Health, Financial)
• Chronic pain/fatigue/headaches
• Anxiety/panic/depression
• Fibromyalgia and Psoriasis
• Sleep disturbances/headaches
• High blood pressure
• Menopausal symptoms
• Cancer; radiation; chemotherapy
• Addiction relapse prevention
• Age-related brain atrophy
• Creativity
• Ability to focus
• Strength of Self Concept
• A host of other things . . .

Along with a wide range of mindfulness techniques, the workshop will provide you with a deep, experiential, integrated learning about the many and varied ways in which to harness the power of your mind and body to reduce pain, stress, and illness.

Classes will include talks, journaling, mindful eating and communication exercises, as well as detailed instructions in sitting and walking meditation, gentle mindful movement exercises, and relaxing body scans, each of which can be modified to suit different body types and conditions.

Classes are highly participatory, practical, challenging, and life-affirming. Students are fully supported throughout the program, which is tailored to meet each individual’s unique goals and needs.

Shell’s MBSR class has been a game changer for me. The course gave me valuable tools that I can use the rest of my life to manage stress, pain, illness or just about anything that comes my way. These mindfulness tools have enhanced the moment-to-moment experiences and perceptions of my everyday life. Also, Shell presents the class in a warm and caring environment that facilitates learning and deep exploration. I would highly recommend this course to anyone, regardless of your life situation.” - Christine Mangan, Clear Brook, VA
