Announcing a new Meetup for The Minneapolis/St. Paul Backpackers Meetup Group!
What: 5 days - 53 miles on the Superior Hiking Trail
When: July 1,[masked]:00 AM
Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)
Meetup Description: Attention experienced backpackers! Lyle has planned a 5-day trip for July 1-5. This is the same time as our Apostle Island trip, but will be totally different, so there will be something for everybody.
This trip is for experienced backpackers only. It is definitely not a beginner trip.
Here's Lyle's trip description:
5 days - 53 miles on the Superior Hiking Trail
We start at the Arrowhead Trail trailhead (just north of Judge C.R. Magney State Park) and hike south about 53 miles to the north side of the Cascade River loop. If we have extra time at the end we can do the Cascade River loop.
We drive up early Wednesday July 1, and come back July 5 sometime in the afternoon.
See maps to get an idea of where this is:http://www.shta.org/Trail/TrailMaps/index.php
Some highlights of the trip will be:
- Devil's Kettle Waterfall ? A large rock juts out and splits the river in two. The east side drops 50 feet. The west side plunges into a huge pothole never to be seen again.
- The Lakewalk ? over a mile and a half of trail right along Lake Superior
- Pincushion Mountain ? Panoramic views of Grand Marais, Sawtooth Mountains, Lake Superior and the Devil Track River valley.
We may all just carpool up and pay for a shuttle to hike back to the car, or we may take two cars and shuttle ourselves. This will be determined in the planning meeting. This trip will be for the experienced backpacker. It is not for someone who has never gone backpacking before.
Things you should know for the trip:
If we choose to pay for a shuttle, they may charge more because the trip is further north than they normally service.
The first day we need to hike 6.3 miles to get to our campsite for the night. This is because the next SHT campsite will be 11.9 miles away. Hopefully we will get to the starting trailhead around noon so we are not under pressure to get to this campsite. Once we get to our second night's campsite we can play things by ear.
Because it is a longer trip than we normally do, it will require more planning for trail meals.
Please come to the mandatory planning meeting on Wednesday, June 24. Details on the planning meeting will follow. If you are unable to come to the planning meeting and still want to come on the trip, please contact Lyle before June 24. Lyle's direct email is [address removed].
If you register "maybe" you will need to change your RSVP to a "yes" or "no" by June 24th, or your RSVP will be canceled.
We hope to see you on the trail!
