New Meetup: Religious Indoctrination Presentation & Discussion, July 25, 1 pm, Golden Valley

From: Jack C.
Sent on: Tuesday, June 29, 2010 8:13 AM
The full title for this Meetup is Religious Indoctrination: Process, Consequences, and Controversies

The format will consist of three parts:
1) a thirty-minute introduction to the topic, followed by question and answers,
2) short statements from individuals who represent different religious backgrounds, in which they share their experiences, and
3) group discussions

We will explore the process of indoctrination as well as the importance of protecting yourself after leaving a religion, including how to confront, educate, and deal with family relationships. Every experience is unique in how it affects the person, but the process of how that experience is created and executed is very much the same. We are interested in the individual, but we must understand the methodology that is used in most cases. We will examine the process as it is used with children in the family, and how it is used in the conversion process. The best protection against faith indoctrination is to be educated on its methods.

This Meetup will be presented and moderated by Grant Steves. His life experience and academic studies make him well qualified to address the issues raised by this topic. In the last few years he has presented lectures on cults and fundamentalism, conducted a debate seminar, co-founded the Secular Bible Study, and has served as Chair on the Minnesota Atheists Board of Directors.
