Atheism and 'the god of the gaps'

A July 28 headline in the Cook County News-Herald asks ?Is it really that ?cool? to be an atheist?? Admittedly, it isn?t.

Even though more than 90 percent of the nation?s top scientists (in the National Academy of Sciences) are atheists or agnostics, no one thinks of them as cool.

And many studies have shown that higher education is linked to greater atheism. But, again, aren?t highly educated people thought of as nerds and uncool?

And are atheist-philanthropists like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet thought of as being cool? I don?t think so.

But in the opinion of Pastor Bill Christ, philosopher Anthony Flew is cool because he abandoned atheism for deism (he does not believe in a personal god or afterlife, but believes in a vague god of nature). Never mind that, in his old age, Flew, a non-scientist, has fallen for the oldest trick in the book: The god of the gaps. And never mind that most atheists have never even heard of Anthony Flew and so they cannot, by definition, hold him in high esteem.

Religion preys on the fears, ignorance, and weak-mindedness of young and old alike. Now that?s not cool!
