Designing for Mobile

Details
As mobile professionals, our jobs tend to fall in one of three categories: design, development, and deployment. At MoMoGR, we've covered development (e.g. HTML5), and we've covered deployment (e.g. 4G). Now it's time to talk about design.
On Monday, August 20th, MoMoGR will host its next event, Designing For Mobile, at The Factory (http://workthefactory.com/) in downtown Grand Rapids.
What are the Android and iOS design guidelines? How can designers and developers work together to enhance projects? What considerations need to be taken when designing ebooks for mobile devices? Find out the answers to these questions and more as we discuss the ins and outs of mobile design.
We are pleased to have the following four speakers lined up to present at the event (bios to come shortly).
-
Kurt Nahikian (CQL): The design process
-
Samuel Bowles (Mutually Human): Designer/developer pairing
-
Jamison Carroll (Freelancer): Designing eBooks for mobile
-
Christian Marcillo (Future Help Designs): Mobile design best practices
Sponsors for Designing For Mobile include The Factory (http://workthefactory.com/), our event sponsor, and CQL (http://www.cqlcorp.com/), who will be sponsoring our food. Please make sure to thank them for making this event happen!"
We hope to see you all there!
More About Our Speakers:
Kurt Nahikian is a business designer and self-proclaimed “defender of the big idea” leading the strategy and venture work at CQL.
Kurt was Educated as an architect and designer in the early 80s and now has worked over 30 years on teams that have launched companies, award-winning technologies and really cool brands.
Kurt has a love for design and the design process and is constantly amazed at the potential of a clean sheet of paper and the fact that no matter what you are designing -- a building, a business, a product or a mobile application -- teams succeed and fail for the same reasons.
Samuel Bowles started his 16-year career at Burger King where he held the ambiguous title of Webmaster. He's still a polyglot and works as an interaction designer, visual designer, and front end developer. He is a dedicated practitioner of light-weight design methodologies and an international speaker (http://samuel.bowles.es/speaking/) on how Agile and Lean are applied to the practice of user experience design. He is co-founder of the financial planning company Spend Wisely (creators of Chext (http://chext.net/)), a member of the advisory board for Human Practice (http://humanpractice.com/), a Chicago-based health-care startup, and a software craftsman at Mutually Human (http://mutuallyhuman.com/).
In his free time Samuel enjoys writing, traveling, tinkering and playing with his two school-aged children. After seven years living in Spain he speaks Spanish proficiently and would love to learn a third language but has to make up his mind between French and Arabic.
Jamison Carroll is a freelance designer / developer with a history in publishing. Between working with startup publishing houses and building custom publishing software for School Zone Publishing, he's developed and published ebooks on iBooks for Apple's iPad, Amazon's Kindle, Barnes & Noble's NOOK, and more. He now provides consulting for independent publishers and teaches at Kendall College of Art and Design.
Christian Marcillo is co-owner and Director of Creative Design at Future Help Designs. Christian's background in management, training, and culture creation allows him to cultivate a dynamic team environment. A Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Biology from Oakland University had a direct correlation into interactions and consumer experiences. His background in the scientific process benefits managing business reports, forecasts, budgets and summaries with insight that a business degree would provide. This combined with a lifetime of Mac user experience and enthusiasm makes him a perfect fit for the App Development environment to complement the engineering skills of his co-founder. Christian’s creative vision helps the graphics design and engineering teams deliver a high- end user interface and end-user experiences beyond each client's expectations.
