Getting Started with Drupal Part 6 – Photo Galleries and Slideshows

On Thursday October 21 we branch out from our monthly 'Getting Started with Drupal Series'. This month we'll cover: Photo Galleries and Slideshows. This is an often-discussed topic in Drupal, and we've seen a lot of interest here in our group in the last few months. What we'll cover in this class:

  • Image handling in Drupal

  • Using Views, View Attach, Views Slideshow, and CCK to create basic image galleries

  • Advanced techniques and other discussions

This is a hands-on class, so bring your laptop and follow along! (You can still benefit even without one, though.) Don't worry if you don't have Drupal installed, we have test installations for you to use, or you can sign up for a free account at
http://www.webenabled... and quickly deploy a new Drupal site. If you have any specific beginner questions you'd like to have addressed, please add them to the comments for this event and we'll try to work them in. If you know anyone who'd like to get started with Drupal, please send them
the link to this page! Recommended reading To best prepare for the Getting Started series, we recommend the book
Using Drupal published by O'Reilly. If you are at all serious about learning Drupal, please just go ahead and purchase this excellent book. Monte, Art, and AJ are just three of our group members who are happy they did! Well-written and aimed at the Drupal beginner, it takes you though the sometimes-daunting Drupal jargon and concepts with ease, and gets you comfortable with managing content and building sites step-by-step. (Although highly recommended, the reading is not required to attend the session – everyone is welcome!) About the Getting Started Series: Each month an experienced Drupaler will present a lesson suitable for Drupal beginners. We'll structure the series so each month builds on the next – if you attend each monthly Getting Started series, your Drupal skills will grow naturally and within a few months you'll be competently managing your site and your content, and on your way to adding new site sections and features. Really enjoyed Scott's presentation, he combines a relaxed teaching style with precision and detail. He's a great asset to the local web & Drupal community! It was also fun for me to share some of what I've learned about images & galleries with Drupal. (-1 star b/c I wasn't as prepared as I wanted to be)

Scott Rouse and Andy Laken are masters not only of Drupal but most excellent teachers. They are very well prepared with examples and teaching workflow. Their patience with questions and ability to quickly answer and return to the thread of the lecture makes them priceless in the local Drupal community.

Both Andy and Scott are able to break down complex higher function modules in an easy to understand step by step process. Anyone with some exposure to building with Drupal would greatly benefit by attending any lectures or courses led by either or both of these passionately committed individuals.

This meetup has been my favorite yet. I really enjoyed the photo, slideshow, galleries presentations. It was a lot of fantastic information packed into a short amount of time, but it was a great taste of what's possible with images in Drupal. Both Andy and Scott certainly showed some huge skills tonight! Thanks so much!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
