Roundtable: Is jQuery killing the internet? (Bozeman)

For our August meetup we're going to have a roundtable discussion on the topic of jQuery and its widespread use across the web. JavaScript is such a huge part of any modern web app that this topic is bound to to provoke a lot of discussion. Hobbs and I (Rob Lund) will "moderate" the discussion, only meaning that we will try to keep discussion focused on pros and cons of jQuery and the topic of JavaScript in general. If you love jQuery or hate it, I encourage you to come out. All discussion will be friendly and open.

Frosty beverages will be provided.

Found that figure about cached CDN versions of jQuery -- quote from a guy on the Modernizr team: "The chance that someone hitting a CDN has [cached your version of] jQuery is 1.7%." -- Alex Sexton

And, as was mentioned in the roundtable, here's the price your mobile users pay:

Great discussion, folks. Thanks for all the insights. Here's tests of various methods of targeting selectors via JS and jQuery:

A few general areas I see discussion is the use jQuery in the context of front-end frameworks (Angular, Ember, Meteor, Volt, etc.), mobile-enabled/specific sites, The Enterprise, and hobby sites/MVPs.

I really hope we get some great discussion out of this!

Darn. Every time there's an interesting event, I'm out of town :(
    Sounds like a fun discussion.
Remember, there's a powerful new alternative to jQuery you can use: VanillaJS ()

I am interested in the topic but unable to attend in person, will this be teleconferenced?

    • Rob L.

This meetup will not be teleconferenced, sorry. We we will likely be having a couple additional meetups on other JavaScript technologies in the coming months, so keep your eye out for those.
