The Human Genome was assembled less than 20 years ago and required a cluster of computers to carry out the complicated computations. Now all of the technology needed to perform that task can fit on your smartphone. People have been exchanging genomics data over networks for decades, but what should we do with the DNA data deluge? As a software developer at the Genomics Institute, David Steinberg works on standardizing how genomics data are exchanged. In this talk, he will discuss the technologies used, the stakeholders involved, and then touch on some of the current research from a layperson's perspective. He will attempt to make the case that a standard model of data interchange will improve our understanding of nature.
