In the first meeting, we focus on a rollercoaster ride of a piece by Luciano Berio which steers through many of the great innovations of 20th century music, from its start up to the avant-garde and experimentalism of the 1960s.

Sarah Angliss introduces us to Leon Theremin's electronic instrument, designed in 1919 and used to great effect in Bernard Herrmann's score for The Day the Earth Stood Still and by Miklos Rozsa in Hitchcock's Spellbound.

Critically acclaimed pianist Helen Burford will lead a discussion on contemporary masterworks for piano, performing modern classics by Milton Babbitt, Jonathan Harvey, and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

In anticipation of the celebration of the life and work of Jonathan Harvey in its Total Immersion series at London 's Barbican Centre, we survey Harvey 's exploration into the mysteries of Christianity and Buddhism through electronic and traditional musical media.
