Tel-Aviv DLD 2016 Innovation Festival.

ABOUT CoSiMa PROJECT, with NORBERT SCHNELL

COLLECTIVE PERFORMANCES and PARTICIPATIVE CONCERTS

The recent availability of affordable motion capture technologies and mobile platforms allows for creating a new generation of musical instruments and interactive audio applications. These systems are currently redefining the boundaries between music listening and music performance. On one hand, new devices and applications, enable music listening as an active participation in musical interpretation and composition. On the other hand, new digital musical instruments integrate notions of perception, generativity, and collaboration, questioning the performance practices and functions of traditional instruments.
In the framework of the CoSiMa research project ( http://cosima.ircam.fr/ ) we currently explore recent web standards (HTML5, Javascript, WebAudio API, WebSockets, Device Motion, Node.js) and mobile platforms to create collective performances and participative concerts.
On the background of underlying concepts and previous works, the presentation will give insides into ongoing work on the design of scenarios, technologies, and applications. It includes various live demonstrations as well as a collective performance that involve the attendees using their own smartphones (Android >= 4.2 or iOS >= 7).

ABOUT NORBERT SCHNELL

Norbert Schnell is a researcher, developer and designer focusing on real-time interactive digital audio processing and interaction design. Together with his colleagues of the Sound Music Movement Interaction Team at IRCAM – Centre Pompidou in Paris, he develops technologies and interaction scenarios on the frontiers between music listening and music performance. He was involved in numerous international research and development projects as well as artistic works in the field of music, interactive audiovisual installations, music pedagogy, and industrial design. Having created musical interactions that – apart from digital technologies – involve traditional musical instruments, chessboards, gambling machines, balls, and kitchen utilities he currently explores collective interaction scenarios based on web-based mobile technologies that involve many people engaging in making music together. He currently coordinates the CoSiMa research projet ( http://cosima.ircam.fr/ ).

ABOUT ORGY
ORGY [ or-gi ] introduces a new form of sound synthesis that we call “Collaborative Synthesis”. It was conceived and coded by Norbert Schnell, Ithamar Eshpar and Tal Bruchstein at the 2016 Music Tech Fest convention in Berlin. ORGY is an additive synthesiser with a collaborative twist: it enables an audience to connect their phones to a soft-synth onstage and manipulate its sound in real time. While the notes are being played by the performing musician, the sound is created spontaneously as an expression of the audience's movement: the position of each phone controls the character of an individual partial (oscillator) of the synth. As both the venue's speakers and the phones simultaneously play different partials of the same sound, a haunting and evolving soundscape engulfs the hall, creating a unique experience of symbiosis between the player and the audience.

ABOUT ITHAMAR ESHPAR and TAL BRUCHSTEIN

Ithamar Eshpar and Tal Bruchstein are the founders of BnE Musical Experiences. BnE creates appliances and applications that enable anyone to play music expressively without long years of training and practice. We strive to bring the joy of virtuoso playing to untrained music lovers of all ages. BnE's projects include “the Baton” - a conductor's baton-shaped controller which allows the user to manipulate the tempo and dynamics of an existing piece of music.

Ithamar Eshpar is an acclaimed sound engineer who has worked with some of Israel’s top artists. Combining his 20+ years of studio experience and his life-long love for computer programming, he is in charge of designing and coding the algorithms for BnE's musical products. Ithamar also teaches Avid's official ProTools certification course at Rimon, Israel's leading college of music.

Tal Bruchstein is a musician and keyboard player, a graduate of the Bar Ilan University program of music and technology. His extensive musical knowledge is the secret behind the intuitive musicality of BnE's algorithms, while his surprising talent for soldering is what makes our hardware tick. Tal also specialises in music education for young children, and is a keen user of music-training software.

About 171

‘171’ are Nadav Oliel and Eyal Alon, who together use their expertise in engineering, electronics, software, research, industrial design, music, musical instruments and user experience. 171’s purpose is to conceive, design and produce innovative, interactive, user-friendly and reliable next generation electronic musical controllers.

About 171 presentation

In this presentation we will demonstrate our first prototype electronic musical controller: The 171.tri.KTH, which is the first generation of our electronic drum pads. We have designed this model for ‘Kick The Habit’ (an electronic music band) to enhance their process of creating a unique performance for their upcoming album.
In order to provide an impactful light-show alongside the musical performance, a band must invest time and resources into designing the light show, hiring and working alongside a professional to be responsible for controlling the lights and video during the whole performance. This type of impactful light-show also requires additional hardware and software to be able to sync with the musical performance.
With the 171.sqr, which is our next generation electronic drum pad, we aim to give every musician the option to make

ABOUT NEWZIK

Newzik is a French-israeli start-up that developed a universal sheet music reader app for iPad & iPhone. Successfully launched in California during the NAMM Show 2016 (https://www.namm.org/thenammshow/2016), Newzik is the Kindle musicians never had. With the Newzik app, musicians can import and manage their scores, tabs, charts or lyrics & chords from a thin tablet. The content is digitized, accessible everywhere at anytime. Newzik developed tailor-made features to make musicians’ lives easier: automatic page-turn, musical online annotations, transposition on fly and screens mirroring…

It's time for musicians to enter Digital Era. Join the revolution with Newzik.
