Description: The hike begins with a 0.5 mile down the dirt road to the Heaton flat trial camp. From there we will proceed 4.2 miles alongside the crystal clear stream. We will cross several streams. Expect to get minor wet. At least 6 stream crossing will test your balancing act by walking on the logs and boulders hopping. Trekking poles is recommended. There is limited forest shade along the trail, but some sections of the trail will be shadowed by the Canyons. We will take a 20 minutes snack/lunch break at the bottom of the bridge. After the well rested break, we will return the same way back.

There will be no sweeper, unless an experience hiker is volunteer to assist with sweeping. If you need to leave early, be sure to inform the hike leader. If you are bringing guest, it is your responsibility to inform your guest on the trail condition and the safety of your guest.

This hike is cross post with another group. I will be the hike leader for both groups.

Distance: 10 miles out and back

Elevation: Gain/Lose: <1000 ft

Level: 4/10

Duration: around 5 hrs

Terrain: Well-traveled trail with some low level streams crossing and boulders hopping.

Recommendation: 3 liters of water/electrolyte, snack/lunch, sunscreen, hat, trekking poles, hiking boot.

DIRECTIONS: From the 210 freeway in Azusa, take exit 40 north on Route 39. Drive 11.6 miles north, passing the East Fork Ranger Station at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. Pass San Gabriel Reservoir and turn right on East Fork Road. After 5.2 miles, when the road makes a sharp bend to the right, continue straight ahead on Camp Bonita Prairie Forks Road, sticking with the river for an additional 3/4 of a mile to the trailhead parking area. Park in the lots or along side the road. Pay close attention to the post sign. Get there early as the parking lots does get filled up very quickly. National Forest Adventure Pass (http://www.simpsoncity.com/hiking/adventurepass.html) is required for parking.
