Let's talk about IDEs

Let's get together to discuss your favorite Integrated Development Environments for PHP.

IDEs can make your life easier by integrating all your development needs into one application. For example: file management, code completion, syntax highlighting, and debugging.

Here are some of the IDEs we would like to talk about, Please feel free to volunteer to talk about a specific IDE using the link to the right if no one has already volunteered yet:

You are not required to order food; however, a full menu is available at the venue. Networking starts at 6:30 and the IDE discussion will start at 7:00.

If you are demoing an IDE please bring a laptop or let us know well ahead of time that you need a working computer with the IDE installed.

I finally started using vim in day-to-day operations

I totally understand that perspective. It's less of a speed thing than a convenience thing. After seeing how malleable the "interface" is and seeing a decent example of a config (the default config is horrible, it turns out), it just fell into place with my current workflow.

Convenience is a big deal. I'd be interested to hear how well you are able to integrate it into your process and if it still works for you a few months from now.

Thanks to Mary, Dave and Andrew for sharing their favorite IDE! Andrew lost me as a potential Vim convert when he said "you only have to memorize a couple dozen commands", but I think Dave made a strong case for Netbeans.

Yep I agree, I'm upgrading net beans today :-)

Gathering links to some stuff mentioned tonight on del.icio.us but not sure what hashtag to use... I went back and forth between #mhtphp and #phpmht - anyone have a preference? My links are here: https://delicious.com/msheppard

I was expressing that I'm a big fan of VIM - I'm gonna try to come and see your demo of it. I don't use it for PHP much - but for perl/python/sql/etc...

You should definitely come. I even taught myself a few new Vim tricks I didn't know before to help me live up to expectations :)

Because PHP doesn't have a build/compile requirement, I've always leaned toward using a raw text editor with a few critical features (my current favorite is Sublime, without question). I'm very interested to see others' workflows with PHP.

    July 22, 2013

I think a lot of people do it that way. Although, oftentimes text-editors creep towards full blown IDE status and integrated debugging can come in handy.

Looking forward to hearing about good IDEs for PHP development. :)
