Since 28 October 2014, the HTML5 spec has finally achieved its Recommendation status. It’s been nearly 7 year since the First Public Working Draft published and by now we all use HTML5.

But how do standards get made? And what comes after HTML5? Bruce Lawson (Opera) and Robin Berjon (W3C) will share their own unique experiences with the specs.

Talk 1: Bruce's Tour of the Sausage Factory - Bruce Lawson

Everyone who’s not mad and/or evil agrees that standards are best for the Web. But how do standards get made? As a veteran of the standardisation world for a decade, I’ll shock you by revealing the torrid reality of the standardisation process. Not for the faint-hearted, we’ll go from the ancient Romans, IE5, Apple’s unclosed tag madness, trainspotting, Wilbur and XHTML2. Do you dare tour the sausage factory?

Bruce Lawson advocates Open Web Standards for Opera (http://dev.opera.com/). He's been active in Web Standards since 2002, working with the Web Standards Project, the W3C Mobile Best Practices Working Group and developer education. He co-authored Introducing HTML5 (http://www.introducinghtml5.com), the first full-length book on the subject. He likes punk rock, fashion, and Jenever.

Talk 2: Make Forks Not War - Robin Berjon

The magic of the Web is built by Web developers, yet Web developers have not been very involved in the creation of Web technology itself. This changes now.

The "Web Platform Specs" project is making open standard development just as straightforward as open source is. This talk goes into the details of how exactly that works.

Robin Berjon is an expert in Web technology with almost two decades’ worth of experience in both Web development and driving standardisation efforts, notably within W3C.
