Tycho Central Peak Climb

This is a climb to the summit of the Tycho Central Peak in Tycho Crater on the moon. The elevation gain is about 6,600 feet. You will not need crampons, because there is no snow. You will need a good spacesuit, because there is no air. If you don't own a spacesuit, you can rent one at REI. Trekking poles are helpful, and as always, no cotton.

The roundtrip driving distance is 478,000 miles, so please bring $47,800 for your driver.

Please indicate in your RSVP if you have a four-wheel-drive vehicle capable of space flight, and if you are willing to drive.

We will stop to eat on the way back at the International Space Station, where they have a very good IPA (interplanetary ale) on tap.

Now that was a trip, my driver hit a worm hole and we missed the exit by 2 light years.

My driver wasn't paying attention and did a sling shot around the moon, now were headed for who knows where! See you all next April 1st.

Another romantic place to take a lady. She'll love the earthrise on the lunar landscape.

Sorry for the No-Show guys. My space/time equalbrium was messed up from a recent time travel trip. It won't happen again, I promise.

Very fun! I loved the games we played over lunch like "Farthest Fart." I couldn't stop laughing! :-)

Will there be any time to slingshot around the sun ... not too close ... and be home in time for dinner?

I'm always up for a new adventure. My boss will be ok with "I'm on the moon" as a good reason for missing work right?

    March 16, 2013

  • Keith

Dogs with previous spaceflight experience are okay, although they will need to be cleared for this mission by their veterinarians.

    March 14, 2013

  • Linda L.

Good thing I can sew, then I can make my own space suit (since REI has them already rented out!) What fun! :)

    March 12, 2013

  • Lorraine F.

Will dogs be allowed on this hike? I'm not sure I'll attend if not.

    March 10, 2013

  • Lorraine F.

REI only has 10 suites and those are all reserved. If you're not 100% committed, please, please, please, change your rsvp at least 24 hours before this event so others can go. We can't have any empty slots for this event, so you might be taken off the list for any future events if you're a no show.

Would someone be willing to drop me off at 30 miles above earth on way back? I'd love to break Felix Baumgartner's record for skydiving as long as we're up there.

    1 · February 3, 2013

Your claim to fame will be meteoric.

      February 3, 2013

    • Lorraine F.

Let's do one of those cool'sh circle things where we all hold hands for a while, like in all those sky diving videos on youtube. I'll be sure to bring a GoPro for this event.

Sounds like a beer fest to me!! Where do we go for the pre-launch meetup? Will we be require to show our space gear to the meetup leader there?

    March 8, 2013

  • Steve J.

Hey, my gear will weigh less. Count me in!

I'd like to go geocaching there. Or should I call it lunacaching?

I can drive. I've got a lease with unlimited miles.

    January 24, 2013

Awesome! I was already planning on adding a space travel feature to my car.

    January 16, 2013

  • Henry

Gas prices are going up, will this effect the donation and how much beer money should we bring?

    January 11, 2013

    • Kim D

Will the drivers be able to accept credit cards?? That's a lot of cash...

      January 11, 2013

    • Henry

Hey, that's a good idea. Also banks have apps that can be used on smartphones so transfer can be made easily to drivers. But I plan on using my money for weight for when we hit orbit and will give it up once we get back to mother.

I am going to take my autograph book to get Elvis's signature. I know he lives there because on a dark night if I squint my eyes hard enough, I can see him waving back at me.

I just got a new car that will be perfect for this trip. It's a Plymouth Satellite!

You also need at least 600 hours in the Delorian Simulator to qualify for a time travel mission, and I'll remind you, Lieutenant Lipman, that you can't join the Tycho crew without completing your advanced brewpub training. One thing at a time.

      1 · January 10, 2013

I have 900 skydives some from as high as 22k... Using supplemental oxygen. And I drive my yaris like its a delorian, just ask the multnomah county sheriff...

I'm not sure if I should use a hyperspace or worpe drive setting for my Aerostar?

    January 10, 2013

    • GabrielF

Would an AMC Pacer (circa 1978) suffice?

      January 10, 2013

    • Dave

Gabriel, no a pacer won't work. But you could take an AMC Matador and bull fight with the constellation Taurus!

Will we be scheduling a training mission to Craters of the Moon National Park in Idaho before we go?

    2 · January 9, 2013

    • mark

sign me up for that one. It may be much harder than Tycho (but cheaper) though given the lack of gravity on the moon.

      January 9, 2013

    • GabrielF

We'll all weigh 1/6 of our Earth weight. 33 lbs. for me

      January 10, 2013

We could carry the 2001 Monolith out with us ... but not in MY backpack!!!

    January 6, 2013

Look Dave, I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over.

Attention crew of Tycho Mission: Essential preflight training will be conducted in March at a NASA-authorized brewpub. Ground control will provide further briefings as our launch window approaches.

    January 8, 2013

    • Robert R.

I'll be at Nellis AFB in March for a week of training, will that count? They may only have brewpub simulators though.

      January 9, 2013

Rob, are going to Area 51?

    January 8, 2013

Cool, I just saw we will be stopping at the International Space Station on the way back.

    January 8, 2013

I think that's going to depend on who you're riding with. My understanding is that not all craft have docking capabilities.

      1 · January 8, 2013
