Announcing a new Meetup for NW Wilderness!

What: Hike thru the “Enchanted Forest” to Opal Pool ~ Jawbone Flats
When: Sunday, May 8, 2011 8:00 AM

Where: Gateway Transit Center
1321 NE 99th Ave. Nearest Cross St is Pacific Ave.
Portland, OR 97220

Why: If you want to see something spectacular, join us for a hike in the Opal Creek Wilderness thru one of the most beautiful old growth forest areas to be found anywhere on the planet.

FEATURES:
The trail to Jawbone Flats and the Opal Creek Pools runs alongside the Little North Santiam River. It follows an old road that is still used to transport items for those that are staying overnight at the privately run facilities. We’ll start on the road and then cross over and follow the trail on the south side of the river up to Jaw Bone flats and Opal Pool. On the way we'll pass through endless groves of majestic Douglas Firs, Pacific Silver Firs and Western Hemlocks, many of which are 500 to 750 years old ! Vegetation in the area includes Huckleberry, Vine Maple and Pacific Rhododendron. Wildlife includes: black bear (don't worry we stopped feeding them hikers years ago) elk, deer and coyote. Spotted owl, dipper and Woodpecker are some of the wild fowl we might see. After a vist to Opal Pool we'll finish the loop by taking the road back to the TH.

DETAILS:

Mileage: 7 mi. loop
Elevation: 300 feet gain
Pace: 1.5-2 mph (approx. 3-4 hours total)
Difficulty: Moderate
