About The NYC Dungeons & Dragons Meetup Group

Welcome to the NYC D&D Meetup Group!

Dungeons and Dragons is the most popular tabletop role-playing game of all time. The game is played with about 6 players. One person takes the role of storyteller, AKA the Dungeon Master, and narrates the story in a medieval fantasy world filled with magic, monsters, romance, intrigue, and adventure. The rest of the players take on the roles of individual fictional characters and explore that world, often becoming heroes in the story. The story is like a completely interactive "choose your own adventure" book. Different shaped dice are used to determine the outcome of attempted actions.

The origins of D&D lies in people who enjoyed playing strategy war games. A player, Gary Gygax, thought to make war games more fun by infusing them with fantasy stories. Players thought it would be fun to bring the pieces that represented them in the game to life. The players invented personalities and started role-playing their characters. Through the years the game has gone in many directions, it is always unique to the group of people playing it. Every game is a mixture of story, strategy, and acting. Some players seldom talk and focus purely on the strategic side of the game. Others embellish every quirk of the character they created and act them out. In the end, it is really just an excuse to get together with friends and have fun.

This meetup group is designed for both new players and hard-core veterans alike throughout the New York City area. We welcome those who have never played before and encourage the diehards to actually meet face to face with other humans (or demi-humans). Most of the regular attendees are over 24 years old. Ideally the meetups should be a place where people, even if they are in a currently running adventure, can come and play with other people they don't usually play with to see different styles, meet new people, teach new players. DM's can use the meetups to recruit players. Players can use the meetups to play at until they find a DM. Even if you are in a campaign please come and support the scene, it's fun!

Happy gaming!

P.S. There are several recurring things we have going. We have the "open to all" meetups that are on the first Saturday of the month in Manhattan and the third Sunday of the month in Brooklyn. We have the RPGA meetups which are every Tuesday night. We have a "taking turns" meetup where DMs get together and run longer adventures on Wednesday nights. If you'd like more info on these please read this post on the message board. People are not exclusive. If they were, they'd be playing at home.
