Port Ambrose is a liquefied natural gas (LNG) marine port proposed for the ocean off Long Beach/Jones Beach/Rockaways, in the same location where a wind farm is proposed. Liquefied natural gas is natural gas that has been super-chilled to -260 degrees, reducing it to 1/600th its original volume so it can be shipped in tankers.
Methane (shale gas) is 86 times worse for climate than carbon dioxide, and LNG increases that damage by 40%, due to the massive carbon footprint required to liquefy, transport and re-gasify the methane.
Tankers would deliver gas into a new proposed undersea pipeline, using two buoys that would constantly scrape the ocean floor, erasing the marine ecosystem in that area.
The builders propose to transport LNG from export terminals (yet to be built) in the Gulf Coast (using gas that will primarily originate in Pennsylvania), drive it up the east coast, and regasify it offshore. They claim this would ease heating costs for Long Island customers, but LNG is far more expensive than local gas, and pipelines already exist to deliver Pennsylvania gas to Long Island. The absurdity of the project is highlighted by the fact that LIPA recently killed a proposed gas power plant, stating they could supply the small amount of additional power required with solar projects instead.
Governors Cuomo and Christie have the authority to veto this project. It’s up to us to make sure they both do the right thing and protect our public health.
