Peter Norvig presenting...

Details

This month we have a special event on a different day because we, or Max, managed to hound Peter Norvig into presenting something... anything. I still have fond memories of reading his AI book back in school so I'm definitely looking forward to this one. Here's his bio:

Peter Norvig is a AAAI Fellow (http://fellows.acm.org/fellow_citation.cfm?id=4663209&srt=all), ACM Fellow (http://fellows.acm.org/fellow_citation.cfm?id=4663209&srt=all), and American Academy of Arts & Sciences Member (https://www.amacad.org/news/pressReleases.aspx?i=198). At Google Inc (http://www.google.com/) he was the Director of Search Quality, responsible for the core web search algorithms from 2002-2005, and has served as a Director of Research from 2005 on.

Previously he was the head of the Computational Sciences Division (http://www.ic.arc.nasa.gov/) at NASA Ames Research Center, making him NASA's senior computer scientist. He received the NASA Exceptional Achievement Award in 2001. He has taught at the University of Southern California and the University of California at Berkeley, from which he received a Ph.D. in 1986 and the distinguished alumni award in 2006. He was co-teacher of an Artifical Intelligence class that signed up 160,000 students (http://www.ai-class.com/), helping to kick off the current round of massive open online classes. He has over fifty publications in Computer Science, concentrating on Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing and Software Engineering, including the books Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach (the leading textbook in the field), Paradigms of AI Programming: Case Studies in Common Lisp, Verbmobil: A Translation System for Face-to-Face Dialog, and Intelligent Help Systems for UNIX. He is also the author of the Gettysburg Powerpoint Presentation (http://norvig.com/Gettysburg) and theworld's longest palindromic sentence (http://norvig.com/palindrome.html).

Important notes about this meetup:

We are in a different location than our normal spot.

  1. Do not RSVP if you don't think you'll make it. Space is limited and we need only people that actually plan on coming to take a slot. If you think you won't make it, update your RSVP to no. We'll be checking names at the door so you will live in infamy if you RSVP and don't show up (or if you change your RSVP to no in the 24 hours before the event).

  2. Security at Bloomberg is very strict - this means that: - you must be pre-registered. No registration on premise - we need your FIRST NAME and LAST NAME. If that info doesn't show up accurately on the Meetup site, please update your Meetup profile accordingly today (or, if you must, send me an email) or you will not be allowed in. - you cannot bring unregistered guests with you - please bring an ID

  3. Time: The meetup will start at 6:30pm. We'll have beer and snacks so come early. Please plan on arriving at Bloomberg at least 15-20 minutes before 6:30pm to avoid lines, clear security and make it upstairs. No one will be allowed upstairs after 6:50pm.

  4. Address: 731 Lexington Avenue, between 58th and 59th St

  5. When you arrive at 731 Lexington, please walk past the reception desk, follow the hallway to your right, and go to the Bloomberg reception desk which is in the back. A badge in your name will be waiting for you.
