Advanced BIM in Modular Prefabricated Construction
The Evolution of New Methods of Construction,
Process and Product, Design and Documentation

Meeting Description
The latest McGraw-Hill Construction smartmarket report, "Prefabrication and Modularization: Increasing Productivity in the Construction Industry" provides insight into the advantages of prefabricated off-site construction.

"Through techniques that have been around for decades, prefabrication/modularization are seeing a renaissance as technologies, such as BIM, have enabled better integration of prefabricated/modular components... Out of over 800 architecture, engineering and contracting (AEC) professionals surveyed: 66% report that project schedules are decreased - 35% by four weeks or more 65% report that project budgets are decreased - 41% by 6% or more 77% report that construction site waste is decreased - 44% by 5% or more.

"These reported productivity benefits of prefabrication and modularization are particularly exciting in today's economy given the benefits of creating superior buildings while saving cost, time and waste."

This month’s talk explains the developments in the modular construction industry especially regarding the innovations in the field of BIM intertwined with new construction techniques.

Learning objectives:

Understand the basic process & principles of modular construction. Learn best practices & procedures for architectural design and documentation in the modular construction & manufacturing industry: The effective use of BIM with multiple software platforms and disciplines for maximizing the life-cycle duration of the Building Model from concept to completion. Understand basic tenets of construction automation – “mass customization”, use of robots, CNC machining, automated steel cutting and ultimately the BIM model deliverables for construction automation in an offsite environment Describe paperless production methods for the modular industry- streamlining construction through the use of BIM and virtual construction. About the Speaker
Over the last 17 years, Ian Peter Atkins has established himself as an expert architectural coordinator and digital designer within both the architectural and manufacturing industry. Ian has developed innovative techniques, protocols and standards for several different BIM/ PLM platforms (Autodesk, Dessault Systemes, McNeel, etc) and disciplines, determining the methods for IPD across all internal and external disciplines (Arch., Stru. & MEP). Alongside BIM techniques for core architectural & engineering teams, Ian has also implemented Construction Management protocols and 6D modeling techniques (Time planning, Cost analysis and facilities management) through various soft wares and cross-trade communications.

Ian was the Director of Architecture and Engineering at Kullman Buildings Corp., a modular construction company where he was a leader and innovator in BIM. He oversaw the design & documentation deliverables on a diverse range of projects including hospitals, multi-story/ multi-unit residences, schools, data centers, higher education buildings including Cheyney University New Student Housing, the largest steel and concrete modular building in the history of the United States.
Prior to Kullman Ian practiced architecture at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (in the San Francisco and New York offices), Thinc Design & has served as BIM consultant for several architecture, construction and manufacturing firms. He has applied his BIM expertise to several award winning projects and has been responsible for many innovations in BIM and architectural design. Overall, Ian is adept at navigating complex multi-phase architectural projects and collaborating with multiple stakeholders who see the value in sharing building information with designers, engineers, construction administrators, clients, local community, and various government departments and municipalities. Ian earned his first degree in Architecture from the University of East London with honors and gained his graduate education (AA Dipl./ RIBA II) from the Architectural Association in London.
