  • October 10, 2012 · 6:30 PM

On October 10th, 6:30 PM, NYC Digital Asset Managers Meetup and METRO are teaming up to bring you our Taxonomist Throwdown! We've got three crack taxonomists who will discuss their practice in depth and answer your questions about the ins and outs, the ups and downs of working in their particular area of information science. Let's meet our Taxonomists:

Matt Johnson is Senior Program Manager for Taxonomy and Information Standards in the eServices division of EMC Corporation. Prior to this position, he was employed as a knowledge management contractor for Microsoft’s global field sales and marketing organization. Matt holds an M.L.S. from Queens College (CUNY) and is the author of multiple scholarly works in the library press on subject cataloging and social minorities.

Heather L. Edwards is a Taxonomy Developer at the Associated Press, managing taxonomies and classification rules for automated classification of news content. Prior to joining the AP, she worked on automated classification for Inform Technologies and an internal taxonomy for the News Research Center at ABC News. Heather currently serves as secretary of the SLA Taxonomy Division. She is the Executive Vice President of the Nasser Sharify Foundation. Heather holds a BA from Tufts University and an MS in Library and Information Science from the Pratt Institute.

Dalia Levine is the Enterprise Information Architect at the Ford Foundation, where she is responsible for the classification of the Foundation’s digital material and the intranet experience including search for the Foundation staff. The panel was comprised of three very experienced taxonomists who each work in similar, yet very different capacities. It gave a well-rounded view of the work and was not repetitive.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
