Dear Friends,

Diwali is perhaps the most well-known of the Indian festivals, celebrated throughout India, as well as throughout the world. Also known as Deepavali, it is a festival of Lights and Colors accompanied by the exchange of sweets and the explosion of fireworks. Fresh flowers, freshly cleaned homes, decorative rangoli and tons of diyas and candles welcome the days of Diwali. Friends, family, and neighbors visit to share feasts and festivities as well as little treats such as khil (rice puffs) and patashe (sugar disks). Puja, worship of deities, takes place at home and at temples with prayers and other offerings.

Diwali also marks the beginning of a new financial year. Households and businesses begin new accounting in new ledgers, which are often decorated with images of Lakshmi. The goddess of fortune, she is the main deity honored during Diwali.

Lets all meet and celebrate it together.

We have obtained an extremely favorable "deal" on a delicious Diwali vegetarian feast from the highly-regarded Saravana restaurant chain. For only $17 per person (this amount INCLUDES tax and tip), we will have an unlimited feast of selected appetizers and entrees as well as bread, dessert, and a beverage of our choice (choice of lassi, tea, coffee or soda). We are very grateful to our friends at the Saravana Bhavan Indian Restaurant in New York for having arranged this wonderful celebratory meal for us at an amazing price. We will not be ordering from the menu -- our food would cost twice the price if we did! Instead we will be enjoying the generous hospitality of the restaurant, and this will leave the bill very easy to figure out -- it will be just the extremely low price of $17 per person, with no extra charge for tax or tip! Saravana Bhavan is a vegetarian restaurant, and our meal will be all vegetarian.

We encourage you to dress in clothes that are brightly colored and might be considered extravagant under ordinary circumstances. Diwali is a time to "dress for excess," and you should choose apparel that reflects the themes of light and illumination. (We do realize that most people will be coming from work, so some of us will not be able to dress as colorfully as Diwali calls for. :)

We hope for you to join us for this great celebration!
