Being a facilitator allows you to meet more people and to take a more active role in our discussions. Here are some FAQs regarding being a facilitator in our meetup group:
What is the purpose of the discussion facilitators?
Our facilitators help keep the conversation on track based on the chosen topic of the event, and to help create a conducive atmosphere for the sharing of insights and ideas.
Does being a facilitator mean that I cannot contribute to the discussion?
Absolutely not! Our facilitators have the opportunity to contribute to the discussions just as much as everyone else.
Are there any rules or guidelines?
Yes, and there are only two of them; one person talking at a time (at each table), and respect for each other.
How often would I be obligated to help out?
There is no obligation since how often you help out is strictly your choice. Our goal is to have several facilitators so that we can rotate them giving everyone breaks. We have started to build up our list of facilitators but we are always looking for more to help out.
What specific experience or qualifications are required?
What is the format for the evening?
We have 5 or 6 people at each table with one of these people being the facilitator. Discussion facilitators arrive at 6:30 to chat about the topic and then the rest of the members are seated at their tables between 7:00 and 7:15. The discussion then begins and continues until 8:45 at which time members (including the facilitators) can either leave, hang out at their table, or move to a different table. It's really amazing how fast this time flies by!
Do the facilitators prepare in advance?
Nope. Just print off the facilitator notes (which are emailed to you in advance) and you are good to go. The facilitator notes contain though-provoking questions which you may want to pose to the group (at your discretion). The notes also include quotes from famous philosophers on the topic of the evening.
If you would like to help out as a facilitator then just say in you RSVP description that you would like to facilitate when you sign up for upcoming events!
