Long Hunter State Park hike and camp on Volunteer Trail

On Saturday, we will hike six miles on the Volunteer Trail to the primitive campsite at Long Hunter State Park. We will leave from the trail head at 1:30 PM and will take about 3 ½ hours to get to the campsite, so we will not be hiking very fast. The hike will include interesting limestone outcrops, cedar and hardwood forests and sweeping views of Percy Priest Lake. The trail is moderately strenuous due to elevation change and rocky trails.

The trail does not loop, so the group will then hike six miles back to the trail head on Sunday for a total hike of 12 miles round trip.

**Please note, the only water at the campsite is Percy Priest Lake so make sure to bring your own supply. Participants should meet at the Volunteer Trail parking lot on Bakers Grove Rd.

The trail head is located just off Hobson Pike at 1594 Bakers Grove Road. There is a sign on Hobson Pike to indicate the location. The hike leader will be completing the camper registration form required by the park.

Sponsored by the Friends of Long Hunter State Park.

***Note

All attendees, I need to gather the following info from you for the camp registration. Please send me a message, DON'T post publicly:

From everyone:
Full name and emergency contact

For people who will be leaving a car at the parking lot at the trail head overnight:
Make, model, color and tag number of your vehicle.

All of our vehicles MUST have a parking tag issued by the Park Office.  I will pick those up when I complete the camp registration and will give those out when we meet for the trip, so it is important that you give me this info. Please send me this information no later than noon on Thursday (10/17).

This hike was lots of fun! The rain stopped, the wind died down, we had a super nice campfire on Saturday night and Sunday was just a beautiful day to be outside. Thanks, Jill, for planning it for us!

I see one spot left; Would it be possible to bring a +1 or is the Park limiting to 10 individuals?

Brian, I'll message you directly about this.

I'd like to join the hike, but it seems RSVP's are closed although it lists "4 spots available". What's up?

Al, I have re-opened the rsvps til Thursday so you can sign up now. I just want to make sure I had time to get all the contact and car info from everyone before hand because registration is required for the campsite, so I didn't want people to sign up last minute.

You may know better than I, but I believe the park requires reservations in advance for both sites along with the registration.

Matt- no, they don't take reservations in advance for the primitive campsites. You may be thinking about the group camp areas. I have to go the morning of the hike and fill out the registration form.

Jill, I'm so sorry that I won't be going with y'all. I'll be on the way to my AT hike in New Jersey. Have fun and please give a report! Rain Man
