Happy New Year Everyone!

I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday season and 2016 is treating you well.

In 2016 we will be holding the first ever South Island SQL Saturday, combining the Nelson and Christchurch user groups on April 16th. Read all about it here:

If you haven't been to a SQL Saturday before they provide a fantastic day of free presentations to sharpen your skills and introduce you to new concepts in the SQL world. We're looking at providing a sponsored transport option down on the Friday and back on the Sunday for anyone who is interested. Please let me know if that is you.

This year we have John Martin flying in from the UK to do a session on the Saturday, but also to do a pre-con presentation on Architecting and Building SQL Solutions on the Friday beforehand.

John has also kindly offered to present us this months session on Securing your Data.

Have you travelled somewhere by plane, train or bus recently? How many people do you see working on a device of some form? Ever had a cheeky look at what they are doing? What would you do if you saw your personal data on their screen….

In the brave new world of self-serve BI and Big Data, data security is something that seems to be forgotten. Given the way in which we consume data on all manner of devices this really needs to change.

There are a number of very simple tasks that you can perform that will help solve many of these problems, without the need to do complex architectural or solution re-engineering. In this session we will discuss the issues and some of the things that we can do in an effort to secure our data.

So be you a BA, BI Developer or simply someone who consumes reports, come and see how simple it can be to secure your data.

This session aims to teach attendees how important it is to put some thought into the way they both build and consume data on the move.

Goal 1: Raise awareness among attendees of how easy it is to gain access to privileged information in everyday life.

Goal 2: Educate attendees of simple ways that we can change the behaviour of users without re-engineering solutions.

Goal 3: Give attendees information that they can take back to their workplace, that allows them to make a case for making security a basic requirement for data systems.

John is an experienced SQl evangelist who has spoken on various topics around the world. This session isn't a technical deep dive, but rather focuses on highlighting data related security concerns that we all need to be more aware of.

As always Pizza and drinks will be available from 5:30, with the session scheduled to start at 6pm.
