It's been way too long since I hosted a Nerd Fun Meetup! Anybody care to join me to see the 10:00 pm showing of Real Genius at the Brattle Theater? At 7:00 pm "The Goonies" is playing, but unfortunately I can't make it.
This is awesome. In college I once had a roommate in our on-campus Student Apartment who refused to talk or socialize with us. He was dubbed "Lazlo". From the Brattle Theater site:http://www.brattlefilm.org/brattlefilm/movie_detail/100528.html#f

"Have you ever annoyed your friends by quoting the lines of your favorite movie? Have you ever been threatened for saying the lines along with a film? Do you love fun? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, than the REAL GENIUS QUOTE-ALONG is for you! The Brattle and the Action Pack present one of our favorite zany films from the awesome 80s and ask ? nay, insist ? that you enthusiastically shout every quotable line along with the characters in the film. REAL GENIUS is a film that defies categorization ? clearly meant to be a teen ?stick-it-to-the-man? comedy, the undeniable charm of Val Kilmer, the spitfire dialogue, and the absurdist finale all add up to something infinitely more appealing ? a screwball comedy for the video game generation!"Where to meet:
T.J. Maher will be waiting just before the stairs leading down to the theater, waiting there by 9:20 pm, just hanging out. We can hop in line at 9:40 pm to grab seats. T.J. is 5 foot 7, with short brown hair, blue eyes, a "Hello My Name is T.J." nametag, and a red MEETUP sign attached to his black messenger bag. About the movie, according to Wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Genius
"To achieve the house filled with popcorn for the film's climax, the production popped popcorn continuously for three months. The popcorn was treated with fire retardant so it would not combust and cover it so that it would not be eaten by birds and possibly poison them. Then, the popcorn was shipped out to canyon country in a subdivision that was just being built and placed in the house that belonged to Jerry Hathaway. [...]
"Real Genius was released on 9 August 1985 in 990 theaters grossing $2.5 million in its first weekend. It went on to make $12.9 million in North America [...]
"In 2007, Val Kilmer expressed an interest in making a sequel to Real Genius, but no shooting dates have been set. A remake of the film is rumored to be in consideration for a 2013 release". About the Brattle:http://www.brattlefilm.org/brattlefilm/about.html
"The Brattle shows the best in classic, cutting-edge, foreign, and art-house films. We also show first-run films and new releases of classic films, but our specialty is a repertory programming format consisting of films from a particular director, genre, or subject shown over the course of a week, or on the same weekday throughout the month. Visit our Series Archive to learn more about past repertory programs.
"Movies have been shown at the Brattle Theatre since 1953, when Bryant Haliday and Cyrus Harvey Jr. started things off with a screening of the German film, Der Hauptmann von K?penick (The Captain from K?penick). Haliday and Harvey later founded Janus Films for the purpose of distributing foreign films nationwide.". Directions to the Brattle:http://www.brattlefilm.org/brattlefilm/directions.html
"The Brattle Theatre is located in Brattle Hall at 40 Brattle Street just one block from the Harvard Square MBTA Red Line T stop. We are located between Eastern Mountain Sports and the Cambridge Center for Adult Education. The building is shared with Algiers Cafe, Casablanca Restaurant, and Harvard Square Optical, and the theatre entrance is on the left side of the building?look for our sidewalk poster case and marquee.
"Metered parking spaces are available throughout Harvard Square, however spaces are limited and competition for them can be difficult and time consuming. We recommend use of public transportation when possible, or choose one of the discount parking garages above".
... I believe they stop ticketing cars after 8:00 pm in Harvard Square at the meters. Can someone confirm this? Mitch: You know, um, something strange happened to me this morning...
Chris Knight: Was it a dream where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?
Chris Knight: Why am I the only one who has that dream?
- - - -Chris Knight: I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"
