Announcing a new Meetup for Nerd Fun - Boston!

What: Volunteer, "Stewardship Saturdays" @ Boston Harbor Islands, NPS

When: Saturday, July 10,[masked]:00 AM

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

Have you ever wanted to really explore the Boston Harbor Islands in depth? The National Park Service is hosting "Stewardship Saturdays" every Saturday from May to October from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm you work side-by-side with the National Park Rangers and other volunteers to help clean up the islands.

It looks like each Saturday they rotate amongst a selection of the Boston Harbor Islands -- Peddocks, Thompson, Bumpkin, Spectacle and Lovells Island -- as the island they will focus on. With each island they explore local flora and fauna, discuss the ecology and natural history of the Park as the group "works side by side to improve habitat for the native birds, bugs, and flowers of our local national park". Depending on which island you are exploring, you may also get to collect data acting as "citizen - scientists" for whatever project they are working on that day.

These events run rain or shine, though may be cancelled if in severe weather the weather started getting rough, and the tiny ship gets tossed ("If not for the fearless crew...").

We also need to bring a lunch.

Participants need to register at the appropriate link at http://www.nps.gov/boha/supportyourpark/stewardship-saturdays.htm ... they haven't yet listed the schedule for July. When they do, I'll update this posting with all the information.

... I've never done this before! Care to join me?

Where to Meet:

Where to catch the boat to the island of the week, what to wear, what to bring, and what we will be doing and what island we are exploring will be added onto this write-up as soon is it is posted at the National Park Service Stewardship Saturdays site http://www.nps.gov/boha/supportyourpark/stewardship-saturdays.htm

What to wear (found on the Spectacle Island registration page):

"Long sleeve clothes and closed-toe shoes, and dress for changeable weather. We recommend sunscreen".

What to bring (found on the Spectacle Island registration page):

"Tools, gloves, water and limited snacks will be provided. Please bring a lunch and a water bottle"

... not sure what tools... I'll check.
