About the event:

Blogging is quickly becoming an important way to share experiences, knowledge and to engage with customers. Come along to hear talks from two experienced bloggers in the not for profit field, followed by time for discussion about how blogs do and could work for not for profits, charities and the likes.

As an editor at the not-for-profit journal PLoS Medicine (http://www.plosmedicine.org/), Paul has gone from being an occasional staff blogger to running the journal’s blog, Speaking of Medicine (http://blogs.plos.org/speakingofmedicine/). This has meant that he spends increasing amounts of his time thinking about why not-for-profit organisations blog and how best to do it. Although he doesn’t promise to have all of the answers, he hopes to provide some insight into how blogs can be used effectively (why blog) and what makes a good blog post (how to blog).

Adelina will follow by introducing us to her blog promotinggoodpractice.co.u (http://promotinggoodpractice.co.uk/)k, where she promoted examples of good practice in community development and community projects. She will discuss how with her blog she aims to help others see the amazing work happening around the world and in effect inspire others to initiate new projects that will change the world they live in.

About the Speakers:

Paul Simpson works for the not-for-profit publisher and advocacy organization Public Library of Science (http://www.plos.org/) (PLoS). PLoS publishes several top-tier academic journals including the world’s largest scientific journal, PLoS One (http://www.plosone.org/home.action). The organization’s mission is to make the world’s scientific and medical literature freely available to anyone with an internet connection by promoting the open-access (http://www.plos.org/about/open-access/) model of publishing. This means that everyone should be free to download, reuse, reprint, modify, distribute, and/or copy articles as long as the authors and source are cited. Before joining PLoS Paul worked as research scientist at the University of Cambridge for four years. Paul is an Associate Editor at journal PLoS Medicine (http://www.plosmedicine.org/) and runs the journal’s blog, Speaking of Medicine (http://blogs.plos.org/speakingofmedicine/).

Adelina Chalmers has worked on a number of pan-European projects and enjoys helping other groups find suitable partners for their projects in Europe and beyond (speaking five European languages fluently helps!). She blogs about this and more at promotinggoodpractice.co.uk (http://promotinggoodpractice.co.uk/). An experienced public speaker, Adelina is often called upon to present her work – and the work of others – at international conferences.
