Enabled by Technology
Marc Bond will be leading this session alongside Martyn Sibley, discussing how digital technology has helped to overcome disability and to start successful businesses. We will be looking at different technologies, apps and ideas to help break down barriers and to inspire confidence.
Marc is passionate about the difference digital technology and social media have made to his life,
"Taking for granted everyday technologies, such as computers, mobile phones and microwaves for cooking. The social media environment is one that has given me a voice to say the things I want to say, whether people listen to me or not.
Today's technologies have allowed me to live a fairly regular existence with the evident and obvious obstacles I face on a daily basis.
The World Wide Web has given me the choice to learn new things at the click of a mouse, work with clients and colleagues at other ends of the planet and maintain familyconnections on three continents."
Martyn also inspires and enthuses with what he has achieved,
"Since graduating and getting myself set up with a 24/7 care team I would now say I’m a blogger, entrepreneur, speaker, creator of disability webinars, co-editor of online magazine http://www.disabilityhorizons.com and a cheeky chap!"
About the event and the speakers:
Born with hydrocephalus, a build-up of fluid in the brain, Marc was fitted with a cranial shunt at birth. Marc is a trained graphic and web designer, who runs a company called Neonical offering creative content (writing, graphic design) services.
With a British father and South African mother, Marc was raised in Cape Town. College followed, then a high-flying job with a top ad agency (whose client list boasted numerous global brands, including Absolut Vodka). “I was 20, 21 and working on film sets for TV commercials, on magazine photoshoots, in recording studios, having my own work produced . . . for someone who had been shut down so many times as a child, that was pretty amazing."
Martyn Sibley will be sharing the 'platform' with Marc;
Martyn describes himself as "a regular guy who happens to have a disability called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). This means I cannot walk, lift anything heavier than a book or shower myself."
Martyn is a disability blogger, magazine co-editor and social enterprise director. Having grown up with a disability he has worked through school, a masters degree, learnt to drive with his hands, travelled to Australia (among other far flung destinations) and lived in London independently. His work life saw 5 years at the disability charity Scope. More recently his of technology/social media combined with the previous experiences into a nifty cocktail. The outcome is a vision to change the world for disabled people using new media.
Marc has also co-hosted Breakfast & Drive-Time radio shows on local community radio.
