Your natural hairstyle is gorgeous, but are you working with healthy hair under your eye-catching 'do? If you want to achieve and maintain healthy hair you have to look beyond style, and come up with hair care routines designed to keep your hair looking its best, even when it's not freshly styled.

You can take steps towards healthy hair by eating a proper diet filled with whole foods, vitamins and nutrients, by using quality products and by taking care of your scalp. Believe it, or not, your scalp plays an important role in your hair's growth and its overall appearance. A problematic or itchy scalp can lead to dull hair plagued with breakage, thinning and a brittle appearance.

Use these quick, useful tips to maintain a healthy scalp and achieve optimal results with your natural hair:

Clean Your Scalp

Thoroughly saturate your hair and scalp with water carefully rinsing your scalp to release as much residue as you can that was left from the hair products you use. While parting and sectioning your hair, apply shampoo directly to your scalp. Begin to massage your scalp which will lather up the shampoo. As you massage, you'll gently remove any dirt, residue or excess oils. People often focus so much on getting shampoo on their hair, that they completely skip their scalps.

Use lukewarm water to rinse your hair and scalp until all of the shampoo is gone. Consult with your natural hair stylist to determine how often to shampoo your hair. If your scalp tends to get too oily, you may need to shampoo more frequently.

Add Moisture

Add a generous amount of moisture to your hair for easy combing avoiding getting it on the scalp. Since clean scalps are capable of producing their own natural oils you don't want the moisture to inhibit this production by clogging the hair follicles.

Treat Yourself to a Massage

Take time to massage your scalp at least once a week. A scalp massage can help you release and distribute the natural oils in your hair for added sheen which will soften your hair, stimulate hair growth and help you relax at the end of a long, hard week.
