Cochiti Lake - North Marina (map)
This race will have a 8 hour cut off time. Plan on a hiking/trekking, mountain biking, water element(now boat & paddle), and of course Navigation. I will have a more complete list of gear but for now you will need(updated 6/8/10):
Mountain bike & helmet
PFD & paddle
whistle
Compass
UTM grid
Backpack with 100 oz bladder and possibly extra water bottles to strap on.
sunscreen
basic First Aid kit
Weather will be hot so plan on bringing plenty of fluids and electrolytes.
Plan on a great atmosphere and fun experience as there will be a Olympic distance Triathlon being held at the same venue. This is the first time an AR and TRI have been run side by side so it should be interesting. Also, there will be a select group of Racers by invitation only that will be "Dual Racers", or doing both the TRI and AR.
more info coming.......don't forget to also register online at New Mexico Sports online. Here is the link:
Racer update 4/28/10:
You will need a boat - Kayak or Canoe w/PFD and paddle. You can rent them from Mike Hayes at Quiet Waters Paddling [masked] in Bernalillo ($35 or $45 day). I'm trying to work out an arrangement where he will drop off the boats at the race and pick them up (probably for a nominal fee like $10 extra). You can bring your own boat, either solo, or tandem. Also you can rent them from REI but they don't have very many.
Racer update 6/8/2010:
Don't forget to register at NM Sports Online. YOU ARE NOT REGISTERED UNTIL YOU DO.
It's now 32 days before race day. The course will be fun and different from last year. Mainly because there will be Dual Racers and a Triathlon going on at the same time - great race atmosphere !! Because of this I'm letting all racers in on a little more race knowledge than usual. Packet pick up will be on Saturday July 10, from 12 noon to 5pm at Sports Systems in ABQ (in your packets you will get the map and plot points for the race). The order of this race will be bike - paddle - hike. Dual racers will start with the Triathlon at 7am sharp. Adventure Racers only start at 7:15am sharp. All Triathlon racers the first wave will start at 7:30am. All racers will be using a staging area at the Boat Ramp area on the Town of Cochiti side. The staging area will open at 5:45am and close to all promptly at 6:45am so you will need to get your bike, etc. there in time. ALSO, you will need to get your boat over to the Tetilla Peak boat ramp that morning as well. The Tetilla Peak boat ramp will open at 5am to drop your boats off. It takes about 45 minutes to drive from Tetilla Peak boat ramp to the Town of Cochiti side Boat ramp -plan accordingly. If you want to save this early morning hassle I would highly recommend renting from Mike Hayes 771-1234 as he will drop off your boat AND pick it up afterwards for a $10 fee in addition to the rental. He doesn't have alot of boats so call early to reserve a boat. Like last year, I will have some bottled water at the bike to paddle transition supplement what you should already have. Still, it will be hot so plan on bringing extra water and electrolytes.
Last Racer update 7/6/10:
At the Bike to water transition we will transport your bike, helmet, bike shoes back to race start for you to pick up. Hint: If you use Mike Hayes or drop your own boat off you can put water, etc. in the boat - just drop stuff off with Mike beforehand.
Additional Gear: You might want to have some sandels or shoes that can get wet. Also, one cell phone per team is allowed.
The road turning into Cochiti Lake Recreation area that goes to the Boat Ramp start will be closed to non-racer traffic from 7am to 12 noon. Be sure to tell your friends, support crew.

This race has all the elements of fun. Lake paddling will be approximately 3 to 6 miles, hiking will be 5 to 7 miles, and mountain biking will be 12 to 18 miles. And it wouldn't be a Steve AR without some epic Navigation to tickle your brain... be sure to sign up on Meet Up and then register on the NM Sports Online site.
