Reading cookbooks is one of life's simple pleasures and used to be my de-stress method of choice while I was in college. I mainly use food books as inspiration for new recipes and ingredients; I rarely actually follow a recipe.
I honestly don't have any particular favorites, but I'll tell you who I dislike passionately. Rachel Ray. Not that she's really a "food writer". Ok, that answer was completely off topic. Sorry.
If I do say so myself, I'm a fabulous cook. I happen to be cheap and creative, which has led my husband to term my cooking "Iron Chef Meets Frugal Gourmet." In a good way. I promise.
