Sent on: Monday, October 11, 2010 11:25 AM
Announcing a new Meetup for Hiking & Nature Meetup!

What: Cold Spring Loop - Easy and Intermediate

When: Sunday, October 17,[masked]:30 AM

Where: Grand Central Terminal
87 E 42nd St
New York, NY 10017

Contact Baiju with any questions about this meetup.

Basics:
This an Easy/Intermediate hike.
Terrain: Hills, some steep
Elevation Gain: 1200ft or more
Distance: up to 8 miles
Hiking Pace: Moderate pace over all

We often have people show up for easy hikes who are expecting something like a walk in central park and are not physically fit enough or properly equipped for a hike. Unfortunately the organizers have had to send people back to the trail head when this is the case.

Please remember that even easy hikes are true hikes: you must be able to sustain several hours of physical exertion and you must have proper gear.

Hike Route:
We'll do a loop out of Cold Spring, up Mt Taurus, and on the under cliff trail. Great views of the Hudson and Hudson valley abound, and fall colors are just starting to peak.

Getting a Spot:
RSVP with your level of certainty and update your RSVP as plans change.

RSVP deadline:
The RSVP deadline is Friday at 10pm before the hike.

Public Transportation Meeting Location & Return Time:
Meet at 8:30 am sharp at the information booth at the center of Grand Central Station. Look for other hikers.

Take the 8:47 train to Cold Spring, arriving around 9:59am. We will return from Cold Spring in the evening--trains run hourly, and what time we return will depend on how fast we hike, and whether people choose to stick around for dinner or a drink after the hike.

Car Drivers and Riders
People who are coming by car and are willing to give rides, please write in your RSVP from where and when you are leaving. If you'd like a ride, please contact a driver (and bring $5 to chip in for gas and tolls.)

If you are driving to this meetup, you should park at Cold Spring train station and meet the group at 9:59am.

Gear:
- Standard day-hiking gear - it's getting cool out, so a windbreak and winter hat are suggested
- 2 liters of water = 2 quarts. 3 liters minimum is suggested.
- Lunch and Snacks
- Poncho or rain gear just in case
- Trail map (and the ability to read it)

A more detailed description of proper day hiking equipment can be found here

All the maps we use are available through the H&N Amazon.com store. The East Hudson trail set covers this area.
