***This is an Advanced hike. You must either have hiked with the leader or scrambled up Breakneck previously***
Terrain: Steep scrambles and rolling hills
Elevation Gain: about 3,000' over all
Distance: 8 miles
Hiking Pace: Moderate/Fast pace
It's Breakneck Ridge time! Let's work off some calories we know we'll be gaining at Thanksgiving!
This will be an advanced hike with a challenging scramble up the ridge then Breakenck bypass (red) then Major Wilkinson (yellow) to parking lot. Then the same thing ALL OVER AGAIN with some possible variations. (Plan for a couple of miles of hiking in the dark and bring headlamp).
Getting a Spot:
- RSVP with Yes or Maybe, depending on your level of certainty. Please write in your RSVP if you are driving and from where.
- Please update your RSVP if you can't make it.
-Since this is a training hike, it is only suitable for fast hikers.
The Schedule and Transportation:
I suggest getting to Grand Central at 7:30 am, and then taking the 7:47 AM train to Breakneck Ridge. As the organizer is driving, let's meet in the larger Breakneck parking lot.
Those taking the train can count on getting a lift from Breakneck to Cold Spring in the evening. We will plan to return in time for the 6:05 train, which returns to Grand Central at 7:21pm.
If you are driving to this meetup, we will meet you at the base of the ridge; there is a parking area .1 mile North of the tunnel on Route 9D, approximately 2 miles North of Cold Spring.
- Standard day-hiking gear (remember your sunscreen, wind breaker, and possibly hat)
- Adequate layers to keep you warm after dark
- 2.5 liters of water
- A HEADLAMP and extra batteries! (Sunset is around 5:30)
- Lunch and snacks
