Monthly Meetup: Introductory Emacs Lisp & ERC

We'll be mingling for a while with pizza and beer, then we'll have a couple of ~20 minute talks.

Harry Schwartz will be giving an introduction to Emacs Lisp:

"Emacs can be thought of as a big Lisp interpreter, so you can't master Emacs without learning some Emacs Lisp. We'll be introducing Emacs Lisp by describing its simple syntax, demonstrating a few Lisp functions for manipulating buffers, regions, and strings, writing a few utility functions, and binding those functions to custom keys. By the end of the talk, you should able to do the same."

Eric Collins will be talking about ERC:

"Internet Relay Chat (IRC) has been a popular P2P messaging system since 1988. Since it uses a text-based interface, it's a perfect fit for Emacs! We'll be looking at ERC, the built-in Emacs IRC client and the solution to all our social needs. ERC easily fits into anyone's workflow and has tons of libraries to make it even more seamless."

Good news, everyone! The videos have been posted at http://emacsnyc.org/videos.html. Currently they're hosted through youtube, but we'll also have downloadable files available shortly. Enjoy! :D

This was a five-star meetup! Both presentations had code and demos that you could actually follow along with! If everyone's meetups were this good, well... we would be quite spoiled. Great job, both presenters. Kudos!

I think they were working on that, but let's be patient!

Thanks very much, Aaron! Hopefully there'll be many more to come. =) And we'll be posting the slides just as soon as we get the videos all cleaned up, which should only be a few days.

I can speak about the Emacs IPython Notebook or Org-mode. Does anyone use Cedet for android development?

I'm not sure if I should be asking questions here. But do you know if EIN works with iPython 2.0?

@Kazuki --I am sorry. I am just not sure, I used it with 1.1.0. I will try and let you know.

Thanks for coming! We're currently cleaning up the videos, but we should have them (and links to the slides/code) on emacsnyc.org within a week or so.

Thanks Harry. I took a look at the website repo. I have not cloned it yet. I will try to convert some of it org-mode. :-)

This looks so cool. It's so sad there is no emacs/lisp groups in Boston.

I have to leave I guess around 8.10p for a train. Do you think I'll get to hear the talks?? I hope so :)

    • Harry S.

Probably the first one! I imagine we'll be eating, drinking, and mingling for a little while before the talks begin.

    Sweet, this looks really cool!

Is there a plan on when this will be? If input is being taken, Tuesdays are bad for me. Well, Tuesdays are bad for me even if the date's already locked down, but then my comments matter less. :)

    • Harry S.

Hi Zachary! We've got a location, but we haven't picked a date yet. We're definitely not doing Tuesdays, since we don't want to conflict with LispNYC. I'm going to talk it over with Eric, and we'll probably be able to pick a date by the end of today.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
