Attention Fellow Philosophers!
Announcing a new Meetup which you might enjoy- ?The Experimental Sabbath Laboratory?
The Laboratory is the perfect meeting for Humanists, Secularists, Atheists, Agnostics, Skeptics, members of Ethical Culture, Brights, and all other freethinkers who seek something more than an intellectual experience.
People who are reason-based and intelligent, will often find it frustrating and uncomfortable to be involved with communities that are built around traditional faith-based religious ideas, and supernatural views of the world, despite the considerable benefits which come from such associations such as fellowship, support, and connection, a sense of becoming better people; gaining a better understanding of themselves, their fellow humans, and a deeper appreciation of the world around them.
Reason-based people who value such benefits are frequently left with having to choose between associating with groups whose core beliefs they reject, or forgoing the beneficial aspects of such associations entirely.
In the freethought community, while there are many meetings and groups which satisfy our intellectual needs, and a few which provide opportunities to socialize, until now there really has been no attempt to provide a comprehensive alternative to the positive features that are forgone by those who disassociate with traditional communities.
The main idea behind the ?experimental? approach is that, rather than having to forgo those benefits, freethinkers have ways to bring such benefits into their lives that are far more effective and satisfying than approaches that are built on a supernatural worldview.
Rather than believing in some eternal and unchanging truth, bestowed from some supernatural source, freethinkers embrace the dynamic process of acquiring knowledge and awareness through on-going experimentation. The wisdom, insight, and awareness which result from experimentation are entirely opposite from the supposed ?revelation? associated with faith-based and supernatural approaches.
The development of the experimental method has arguably been humanity?s greatest achievement; it has completely reconfigured our world. Because the Experimental Zone applies the experimental approach to knowing to ourselves, and conveys the joy of knowing the world around us through science, the result can be equally revolutionary.
The Experimental Sabbath Laboratory is the first
project launched by the
Experimental Zone; the goal is to provide a dynamic and fun way to end the week. The Laboratory is designed; to heighten our understanding of ourselves; to deepen our empathy towards others; and to provide a better understanding and a satisfying sense of connection to the world around us. Our meetings are comprised of a series of experiments including: personal experiments- such as meditation and bio feedback; inter-personal experiments, such as a sensitivity/communication activity; anti-authority experiments, such as doing ironic things with photos of your supervisor at work, creativity experiments, such as a group art creation, a improvised group story, or song; planetary experiments, such as experiments with electricity, air pressure, and optics; and in the moment-fun experiments, such as playing games that can make us laugh like children.
We meet on Fridays at at a convenient and comfortable downtown location that is distraction free and there is no charge to attend. This Meetup is brand new and how we develop will be partially determined by those who participate. If the idea of bringing more experimentation into your life sounds good to you I urge you to try this experience and see if it provides you with value.
