Run with Scott Jurek around Manhattan

Eat & Run — all the way around New York.

Scott Jurek, star of the bestseller Born to Run, will celebrate the release of  his new memoir, Eat & Run, by running all 31 miles around Manhattan in just 5 hours.

The public is invited to join Scott along the way for a few miles or more. Pace will be about 9:30 minute per mile.

Jurek will begin the run on June 5, 2012 at 5 a.m., and finish it by arriving in time for noon talk at Bryant Park. Joining Jurek for portions of this epic run will be friends and admirers like:

*Christopher McDougall, author of Born to Run

*Peter Sarsgaard, actor and director of the Born to Run movie

Jurek writes:

“There is something simple and pure about doing a loop run and the historic beauty of Manhattan beckons even a lover of mountain trails like myself.  The Manhattan perimeter run makes for a perfect ultramarathon, just a shy over 50K (31 miles), one of the standard ultramarathon distances in ultramarathoning.  So much running history has been made on the streets of New York City and I am excited to soak in more of that and share it with others.  Ted Corbitt was a New York City and international running icon who has been called “the father of long distance running.” He was an ultramathon pioneer, American record holder, Olympian, president and co-founder of NYRR club.  Ted was a role model for African Americans at a time when equality in sport was in its infancy.  I will be running in memory of the late Corbitt and my good friend Micah True, “Caballo Blanco” of Born To Run who reminded me to derive strength from those who ran before us.”

Start: 5:00am at Robert Moses Playground, south of the United Nations Headquarters

Route will follow north and in a counter clockwise direction.  See map: http://www.mapmyrun.com/s/routes/view/run-jog-map/new-york/new-york/38088602

Pace will be a leisure fun training pace to allow runners of all abilities the chance to join Scott.

Great event. Perfect weather. SJ had a great attitude about the event. He seemed genuinely excited.

The enthusiasm among all the runners was great, and Scott was about as nice a guy as you could want him to me.

I had a great time today! Thanks Scott, Mike Oliva, and others.
Such a friendly bunch of people!
Mike was especially helpful in letting me know where the group was when I ran across the GWB from NJ.
Since I didn't do the entire 50K+ with the group, I ran a loop up in Central Park after the talk at Bryant Park.
I really enjoyed the talk too. I'll be buying Scott's book on Kindle.

Thanks all. What great fun and a true pleasure to meet everyone. As the flamme rouge the last 5 were a bit less fun---but what a great, relaxed way to do my first ultra. This was a great 57th birthday present. See you on the trails.

Wow, so happy to run with the group through Dyckman Fields! Thrilled to keep up for that 3-minute portion of the run -- my daughter stayed with you to 181st Street -- just amazed at everyone running all the way around the island, never thought that was humanly possible -- you are my heroes!! See you all tonight at the book launch. What a great way to start and end the day!! : )

Denise; I will be entering the run on the Greenway just under the GWB if my timing works out. I am running over the GWB from NJ. If I'm early, I will run north on the Greenway to meet up. Mike Oliva was kind enough to provide his cell phone # so we can find out where they are. Just check his message above.

Denise; Yes, they are running through Inwood. My mistake. Crossing over from the east side on 218 and into Inwood, then onto the Greenway, not down B'way. Just check the link above to MapMyRun.

Will try to meet up around the boathouse for a little. Will be with baby so depends on weather and timing. At least maybe we will waive hello.

So... the group is not running through Inwood Hill Park, but down Broadway to Dyckman, and then over to the Greenway? That looks like about 10 miles from the start (depending on the route), so the group will probably arrive at the Dyckman Greenway entrance around 6:40-7am? As a new runner, I can't (yet) even achieve a 10-min. pace... but I'll try to keep the group in my sight until my exit at 181st street! : )

I would bet on a stop at Twin Donut up at 10th ave and B'way, or one of the produce stands along B'way between there and Dykman.. Once on the Hudson River Greenway, there won't be much opportunity for stops. Battery Park City would be the next, and there should be plenty of places to get replenished at the finish in Bryant Park.
There may be ice cream and hotdog vendors on the Greenway around 86th st, but I don't think any fruit stands there.
There is a cafe of some sort on the piers south of 42

Michael, do you know if they'll be any water stops? I know it would be time consuming for a large crowd to stop to buy drinks but then otoh we'd need to carry packs.

I'm going to run over the GWB from NJ, and try to meet up on the Greenway under the bridge. I'm guestimating 07:00, but I will try to contact Mike O. once I get over the bridge.

People have been asking me if they can meet us mid run. Timing these meet up points is often impossible so I suggest giving me a call during the run if you are joining us and I will do my best to answer and let you know where we are. [masked]-0728. The pace will be no faster than 9:30 miles but not slower then 10:00 minute miles because Scott has an event to be at in Bryant Park early in the afternoon. See everyone Tuesday!

I'm planning to do at least part of the run - maybe the first 16 or 18 miles. Will be fun to run in a less stressful mode than I did 2 weeks ago...

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
