The Gilded Age, also referred to as the American Renaissance, marked the first time that the titans of American finance and industry had more wealth than their European counterparts. With that wealth came the need to have any property they touched dripping in architectural detail and embellishment that rivaled the great cultural capitals of the world like London, Paris, and Rome — enter the Beaux-Arts movement. How did this style define New York City, and specifically, it's centers of knowledge? It's time to get an exclusive glimpse at some of the city's greatest Beaux-Arts rooms and buildings, and dive into the lives of the most prominent millionaires in American history.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore some of New York’s most notable Beaux-Arts skyscrapers built during the early 20th century, from stories of the commercial titans and business conglomerates that commissioned them to an extensive look at their opulent interiors and exteriors.
Led by architect Phillip James Dodd — author of *An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture on New York City *with foreword by Julian Fellowes — our virtual experience surrounding the evolution of the skyscraper during the tail-end of the Gilded Age, and race to be the tallest building gracing the Manhattan skyline, will include
- How unprecedented technological advancements, rising property costs, and a desire to fluent newly acquired wealth set the stage to create a new distinctly American form of architecture — one that unabashedly promoted capitalism and showed that wealth could indeed defy gravity
- The history of the fabled Newspaper Row, which included many of the earliest skyscrapers in the city — while some of these structures remain standing, lost are The New York Tribune Building and Joseph Pulitzer's New York World Building, once the tallest building in the world
- The intertwined story of three iconic skyscrapers, each more glorious than the one before, and each crowned the tallest building in the world — the Singer Building, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower, and Woolworth Building
- Why the Standard Oil Building is widely recognized as being the most beautiful Beaux-Arts skyscraper in Manhattan, with many of its architectural details taken from antiquity
- A discussion of the Cunard Building, with its awe-inspiring interiors and nautical themed decoration, is able to successfully blend the abundant ambitions of the American Renaissance with the stoic imperialism of Britain’s Edwardian Age.
- The story of the New York Life Insurance Company Building, with its recognizable gilded tower modeled on the spire at Salisbury Cathedral
- The architects who designed these magnificent buildings including Cass Gilbert and Richard Morris Hunt
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Phillip — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
