Conejo Rim Hike - Sunset/Ocean View - 4 mile - Rancho Dos Vientos, Newbury Park

Details

Join us for a 4-mile sunset hike along the rim of the Conejo Valley Western Plateau, featuring glorious views of the Oxnard Plain, the sun setting over the ocean and the Channel Islands, and vistas to Santa Barbara and beyond.

We start from the trailhead at Dos Vientos Community Park that leads uphill through wildland nestled between the housing tracts. After crossing Via Ricardo, the trail follows the ridge that forms the plateau rim and so offers some of the most incredible views of the sunset to be found in the region. The trail merges with Edison Road, essentially a dirt fire road in very good condition with a reasonable grade that works its way up Conejo Peak. We make our way to the 2-mile point at one of the ridge saddles and then turn around.

At the end, there is opportunity to either linger at the great facilities of the community center, or move on to the restaurants that are just a few blocks down the street.

This hike is meant for slow hikers and fast talkers. Think of this as a chance to slow down, get some fresh air and exercise.

Trail Conditions: The trails are improved and in excellent condition and much of the route is on fire road (that is closed to cars.) Total climb is about 200' on moderate grades. Most of the route is wide or vary wide for easy side-by-side walking.

Preparation: The hike starts just before sunset and should end after sundown, so be prepared for cold and some hiking in the dark. Carry snacks for the mid-hike break or bring what you like for apres-hike at the picnic area. Running shoes or light-duty hiking shoes should be sufficient.

Directions: Find Borchard Rd. in Newbury Park (the western part of Thousand Oaks). From the 101, use either Wendy or Borchard exits. Take Borchard Rd. west up the steep hill until you see the Dos Vientos Community Park (very hard to miss). Park in the north end (right side) of the parking lot by the group parking area where we will gather. You have 10 minutes grace to be late.

Cancellation: Rain cancels.
