January Meetup - 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami

  • Jan 8, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • The Courthouse Hotel

The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.

A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver’s enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 —“Q is for ‘question mark.’ A world that bears a question.” Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.

As Aomame’s and Tengo’s narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.

A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell’s—1Q84 is Haruki Murakami’s most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.

Sorry guys. We were sitting on the bottom floor with the books on the table. It's the only time we've changed the date of one of our meetups so unfortunately there were a few hiccups. We hope to see you in Feb!

...and please feel free to come along on Tuesday even if you haven't finished. We would love to hear your contributions/thoughts regardless!

Apologies about the last minute change of date for the meeting. I'd love to host a follow up meeting next Tuesday however with Bev in Mexico/clashing personal commitments I think it might be best if we wait until February's meet up date.

If you're unable to make it tomorrow night then please come along in February. I'm sure we'll have more than enough time to discuss Syrup and IQ 84. The extra 4 weeks will also give people ample time to finish both books!

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow night or in February :)

I'm in the same boat - still reading. Maybe those who haven't finished yet can meet up on the 15th?

About that point I should start saying my attendance is dependent on Suz finishing this and lending it to me with any time left to read it!

How lucky, just finished reading this. Had to have a break between books 2 and 3 though it's a big read!
