Ten Things You Should Know About Bay Area Night Photography PLEASE READ

  1. The organizers and hosts of Bay Area Night Photography are not paid to do what they do!
BANP does collect optional donations, but those are plowed back into monthly website costs supplies, and meeting room rentals.  In fact, the money has not even been used to cover host and organizer personal costs like gasoline and shortfalls. As volunteers, their initiative in organizing and hosting events waxes and wanes with your support and/or criticism.
  2. Bay Area Night Photography is the largest Night Photography group in the world! (At least the largest such group in all of Meetup)
Now you may understand why it is often hard to get into events since there are only 7 hosts and over 1800 members.
  3. Almost every question that gets asked about BANP events and policies is spelled out in the "You Must Read This" page or on the event description itself.
    Have you read them?
  4. We've not run out of things to do... but we are very short on people to lead events!
Rather than complain about not getting in an event volunteer to lead an event! Become a leader yourself.
  5. Most of our events use a Lottery to select participants
Because of the heavy attendance and the desire to give people a chance to attend without having to be the quickest to respond we wrote and use a lottery tool that randomly assigns members to available spaces. That's why many events start out with only a waiting list!
  6. Selection of and number of attendees is at the discretion of the event leader (aka the host).
The host(s) are throwing the party they get to decide who can come, and how many people they can adequately shepherd.
  7. We do keep track of who doesn't show up.
Unless the event description says otherwise, no-shows lose favor in our eyes and WILL be passed over for future events.  In 167 events there has never been a host who didn't show up! But we had about 20 no shows at the last event in February.  That's unfair to the rest of the group and that's why we keep track.  It's also why if you've signed up with just a single name and/or no photograph you might be passed over for events or marked incorrectly as not having attended.
  8. We DO give preference to those who Support us annually.
We allocate more space to supporters and sometimes have supporter ONLY events.
  9. StarCircleAcademy and Bay Area Night Photography are related.
Steven Christenson and Eric Harness are cofounders of each group (Harold Davis is also a co-founder of StarCircleAcademy).  The main difference is that StarCircleAcademy offers fee based Webinars, Field Expeditions and Workshops and includes members from all over the world.  Bay Area Night Photography is, of course, focused on events in and around San Jose, California and most events are free or at cost.  There are other groups in the area, too, including the third largest group in the meetup world that does Night Photography: Photography with Harold Davis. Harold's repetoire is much larger than Night Photography.  Bay Area Night Photography was founded by Wing.
